Thread Starter | mobile recording in canada?
Hello there!
Myself and my wife have been toying with the idea of moving from the UK to Canada in a few years time. As an experienced live recording engineer (if you name a band, I have probably recorded them), what I wanted to know is what is the posibility of linking up with any canadian mobile recording companies to offer my services, or is there enough business to warrant setting up on my own? Its really just an idea at the moment, but I just wanted to do some research, so any information would be gratefully recieved. we have been looking at either BC or maybe ontario or NS.
thanks
joe
oh, and nice to meet you all by the way!

Go to BC or NS: there's enough of us here in Ontario already!

Hello,
I'd say bring your credentials with you. It seems there's less and less money and respect for ALL aspects of audio services (IMO).
You might want to get in touch with a couple of mobile folks here in Canada: maybe touch base with Clicktrack in Ottawa - he might have some insight. There is always something to record, just an issue if there's enough (or ANY) money for it!?!
IMO, Ontario would be the market, and GTA (Toronto) the hub of your potential market (8.5 million in the golden triangle).
I've known a couple of mobile folks in BC., and it's my preference, but farther removed, less population, and distances (not to mention HORRIBLE highways/urban planning!?!?) are the drawbacks - the plus' are the ocean, mountains, rainforest, etc.
Best with your decision - Canada is a great place to live - I keep realizing that every time we travel elsewhere.... |

A bit nippy in the winter in the but a wonderful country with its head screwed on right. thumbsup

Don't get me wrong - I have no "love" for Ont. (actually, I think it was me that coined "Onterrible"!!!) but unless the OP wants to do mobile recordings of djembe jams, and "out in the boonies" FolkFests, he should consider where the best chance of work is - that is, unless he wants to drive 5 days to get to the gig... |

Doug Mclement @ Live Wire in Ontario is the man. Has an amazing truck and is basically a one man show. Maybe he needs other experienced engineers. Maybe not. Wouldn't hurt to give him a call. Top notch guy.

Le Mobile in Quebec is famous, dunno what else there is out there. I know a few local guys in Montreal that offer the service, but don't make a living at it yet.

Ontario certainly has the largest population base in the country but that brings it's own set of challenges.
Montreal is a european style city with a great music scene. They also have some very strong festivals (i.e. Montreal Jazz Festival) The really nice thing about Montreal and surrounding area is that is very affordable to live there. The GTA is expensive, relatively speaking. Most people speak English in and around the city but if you stay there for a while you will probably want to learn some French. Montreal gets more snow than Toronto and hell of a lot more than Vancouver.
Le Mobile is probably the most well known mobile recording company in the country. I would definitely consider getting in touch with them.
Good Luck

Thanks for all the advice guys. I appreciate all the advice and info. I'm going to try and visit canada in the autumn.
I'll email some of the companies mentioned and see where we go from there.

British Columbia is amazing... but the driving is horrifying. I'd almost be scared to fill my car with expensive stuff after seeing the damage one taxi can do.
Haha but aside from that it really is a great place.

Doug at Livewire is a GREAT guy. You might also want to look into the CBC radio corp... not sure if they replaced thier trucks or not, but although a bit more corprate, great facilities and nice folks to work with.

As a former resident of the beautiful Montreal let me tell you it snows there. No, I mean it really snows there. Montreal gets more snow every year than any other major city in the world. I can remember standing on Sherbrooke in December with snow falling at a foot an hour and nobody paying much attention. Elsewhere things would have stopped working. And, tabernacle, when it really snows you can snowmobile down Sherbrooke, the main drag. On the upside the entire downtown is connected underground. After hopping the Metro you need never see the weather again until you get off the Metro again at home.
And the women in Montreal. You won't believe me. They are incredibly beautiful. You have to see them to believe it. I was stunned for six months. Downtown is jammed at the center/centre (Place Ville Marie) at midnight seven nights a week. It is a great place.
I cannot adivise about the music scene as I was in grad school while there and pretty busy. I did get out a few times, but it was a long time ago. Do not miss Ben's for "smoked meat."

Indeed, the french division of the CBC has replaced its trucks with Optocore/Radar/PTHD rigs, slated to be operational for the upcoming festival season.
There are not many options here in Mtl.

Guillaume Bengle's Le Studio Mobile is in Montreal.
They have been in business for over 25 years.
We have talked on the phone about a possible gig -- He's a really nice guy.
Are they the same folks you're referring to?
