Question becoming a boom op in NYC

anyone got any advice? I worked as a sound designer in audio post for awhile and did a few gigs as a boom op on some shoots and enjoyed the work. would like to get into boom op/sound mixer for film/tv and commercials but am not sure where to send resumes or how to begin. thanks.

I don't know how much help it is, but there is a "crew" subsection on gigs on craigslist.

Go to some of the television film/ rental houses in NYC

Gotham Sound

Pro Sound

not sure of others as Im a "Gotham" guy.

tell them you're interested in getting into location soundwork, they may give you some names of mixers, you most likely will have to 3rd for someone (sound utility, cable puller, 2nd boom...)

then cold call people. even with past experience in post and limited field exp you can always go the PA route and get on set to meet the soundies. Its really about attitude and networking here. Of course being good is usually at the top of the list, but nepotism is rampant. If you have a positive attitude and are pro-active on set you will be remembered and people will want to work with you more.

oh and try mandy.com and productionhub.com too. Good resources.

my grammar and punctuation may be terrible but my work isn't.

good luck.

I would recomend start making shortfilms, be good at it, this will get you known and start creating a network for you.

Here are a couple of active video forums: DvxUser and RedUser
