Talking On Location... Right now...

Oh the joys of this modern age we live in.... Courtesy of Toronto's OneZone wireless internet, I am on location at the Reverb doing a capture tonight and also online and surfing GS...

If I'd brought my camera's cable I'd be able to upload images of the show and the rig in real time.

At any rate, pointless post, probably worth deleteing. Just wanted to say hello from location, while I'm waiting for the first band to start!

Not a bad one. If anyone online wants to come doan and check it out in the rain, there are some good funk/r&b/hiphop acts on tonight. Could always fit some more people!

It will only be a pointless post if you don't tell us more about the event and your set-up.

Give it up and turn this thread into the gig report it should be!

Ok ok... Still on location... Last band of the night.

For this gig, I have a fairly simple set-up... Last gig I did for this radio station I went a bit more all out. API and UA pres etc...

For this gig I'm going all mics split into a Mackie Onyx 24-4 direct out to an HD 24. I'm also doing a stereo mixdown to logic as a backup.

I know.. I know... Nothing to shake a stick at, but it's a Sunday night gig

I'll post mixes in a few days if anyone's interested. Or maybe just the 2-trk mix I did here tonight...

;-)

Let us hear what you came up with.

Is it via the Internet or are you using ISDN to a radio station?

What mics and other toys are you using?

Will you be uploading any photos?

Ok, more detail i suppose is needed...

Drums are a combo of Senn E604 on toms, beta 57 on snare and beta 52 on kick, and AT5100's on overheads. Radial DI on bass plus an EV409b on the cabinet. Bass backline has been changing all night between an Ampeg head into a goliath 6x10 to a Mesa Walkabout 1x15 combo... Guitar amps have been a total mashup all night.. Fender, Mesa, Marshall, Epiphone.... All guitars mic'd with 57's. Vox are all 58s Room mics are Crown pcc160s

For those curious the FOH cabinets include 16 18" subs, 8 of which are folded horns. The FOH guy pumped them up for me tonight and I could feel my heartbeat shift...
Mains are 2x15" JBL loaded Meyer cabs with supertweeters.

Thats all I got for now ;-)

With all that "pumping" how are you managing the stereo mix?
Are you in an isolated room mixing on speakers or headphones?

I'm in an isolated (ish) room off to the side of the main room. The nice thing about the "ish" part is that i have sightlines to the band and the FOH position.

I'll post pics and mix when I get a chance. The radio station I'm working with is internet radio only, so I do these captures for them, then shoot them off the mixes that they run on air. We've also toyed with the idea of doing a DVD and releasing an album of the nights. This station is all Canadian indie music (of all genres) and they've been garnering some good press here in the TO indie scene for supporting indie artists. I do a bunch of pro bono work for them.

See what you did... now I really want an iPhone. It'd be great to be able to post as-it-happens words and pictures from a gig.

On the other hand, I could just take more pictures with an ordinary camera and remember to post them when I get home. I'll give that a go. But it's like watching a live football match vs a recording... there's something special about knowing it's happening right now.

Nice one. Hope the recording all went off well.

Ok, the morning after... Unfortunately my camera battery died, so I didn't get as many show or set-up pics as I wanted. Still, here are a couple of pics from last night!

Just going to review some of the 2trk mixes I printed last night, if any turned out I'll post those soon.

Ok, here are a couple of short samples. These are just the mixes off the desk last night with nothing but the stock eq section. Not the greatest, I'll post the finished mixes from the HD24 in a few days!
