Question stage monitor power

so i'm looking at building some monitors from the billfitzmaurice.com page. and I'm thinking it might be a good idea to make the monitors powered. I'll be using them for my band and life will be much easier if i don't have to carry around another power amp.

So, does anyone know of a good "installable" power amp? something that would basically turn a passive speaker into a powered one.

Flying Moles seem to receive good reviews!

hmm... this seems interesting. i've always enjoyed pretending i'm handy. let me know how those speakers you make turn out. anyone else around here venture into making p.a. cabs before? might try it just for fun anyway.

i like the idea of those flying mole modular amplifiers, too. how do you go about getting one off those? I didn't even see pricing.

They are from Japan, in their website the USA distributor should be Pmc Speakers/

If you put them in a box with high efficiency speakers, they can put some dBs....

Good luck with that. Let us know how well they compare to production line wedges, like Meyer UM-1s, Clair 12AMs, or Firehouse F12s.

Videotheque,

Not to be inflammatory, but isn't that like saying that apples explode really well (when they're packed full of dynamite)?

My point was that for 160w - no matter how light - that's a bit costly. If I had a Skytek or Prosound amp that put out 160w then it would be loud with high sensitivity speakers wouldn't it? It's too rich for me. I think that is a bit too costly - you could buy a genelec 8030 (inc. drivers and cab) for that!!

oh, were you saying in your first post that that amp he linked to is supposed to go for 250 pounds sterling (or euro, i guess)? it was sorta vague. that would be rediculous. what's the exchange rate to $ like now again? even $250 would be awefully steep.

i was more interested in their rackmount modular amplifiers that put out anywhere between 8x300 and 16x100 watts. those seem interesting to me for the top sections of a 3 or 4 way rig, or even as bi-amped wedges possilbly. ...if they're up to the rigors of the road, that is...
