Like the Petty/Eddie pictures; looks like you had good seats.

Kind of a coincidence, but I'm reading a book called "Around the world in 57 1/2 gigs", and near the end the author talks briefly about what is being discussed on this thread.
He just happens to mention the time he saw ZZ Top on the American Music Awards and the drummer dropped his sticks and went to the front of the stage and danced for the rest of the song (while the drumming kept right on going).

So, I guess I'm guilty of being naive...that is thinking the old pros wouldn't participate in so a thing.

when it comes down to it, you have to realize who your audience is...and when you're playing something like the super bowl or some generic award show, your audience sure as hell isn't the people sitting in the stands. at that point, putting on a show that's visually appealing is often considered more important than a solid musical performance.
