Hello Roland,

That is only the dummy head there. The other things are lighting cans and lenses in the background. The metal parts screwed into the top on the dummy head allow for tilting
down and pulling the dummy head in or out depending on the orchestra position.

Hello.

Hello all.

I'm new to posting to this site, but i've been reading this thread and others here for quite a while now. Anyway, here is a pic of my rack. I really love everything that i have and captured some really great stuff. Let me know what you think.

I was wondering what most of you use for Monitoring, and also, what crowd mics / techniques you've found to be the best for you?

Rob

Set up for the audio recording for the DVD of Jonathan Coulton (Brooklyn, New York based singer/songwriter) at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. The DVD will be released this Fall.

The set up was 16 channels (24 bit, 48K) simultaneously to computer (ProToolsM) and digital tape (DA-78, as backup). The AD16 provided 4 lightpipe feeds (two duplicate sets of 16 channels). One set went to the HP computer via an M-Audio Lightbridge, the other went to the DA-78s via the 2408. Equipment (top to bottom)

LEFT:
HP nv9440
Furman PL-8
MOTU 2408 (used to convert lightpipe to TDIF)
Antelope OCX (master clock)
Apogee AD16
Crane Song HEDD 192 (not used this time out)
Apogee DA16
Tascam DA-78 (two)
Great River mp-4 (great natural sounding early GR pre- from when the company was still named Kennedy and son)
Millennia HV-3 (4 channels)

RIGHT:
UA LA2A (for Jonathan’s vocal)
Furman PL-8
Demeter VTMP-2b (two)
API 3124
Demeter H series mic pre
Furman PL-8
Clear-Com RM-120A (used to communicate with my A2 upstairs in monitorland)
Mackie LM-3204 (for monitoring the recording)

(The Mackie 1402 on the table, to the right, provided the DVD’s director with an audio monitor feed.)

the other photos are Jonathan (center stage in white t-shirt) during sound check and director Adam Feinstein and his nest of video monitors (and an unnamed AD)

The laptop is a 900-Mhz Toshiba, perfectly enough for multitrack recordings. The 19-inch-PC is an old overclocked Celeron... (600@900). I rarely use it these days, but it served me well for quite a number of years.

Hey d_fu.

I'm looking into laptops for a mobile rig and after looking at all the issues with core2duo and firewire etc I've been considering an older laptop for audio use only.

How many tracks can your Toshiba cope with? I'd be running a multiface over pcmcia cardbus (the later version), and would possibly want to upgrade to a digiface later on.

I'd either run XP with Sonar or Reaper, or possibly Linux using Ardour DAW.

I cant see me needing to record over 24 tracks at 24bit/44.1kHz - if it gets to that point i'd probably upgrade the laptop anyway. I'd imagine my "usual" track count would be either 2 - 4 at 24/96, or 8 - 16 at 24/44.1

What size/speed is the hard drive and what sort of track counts can it manage?

I have an old Dell Latitiude which I could use. Its PIII-m 1ghz with a 30gb Hdd. Unfortunately only USB1 so no chance of using an external drive to record to.

If you could give me a little more info on how your system performs I'd really appreciate it. Also, what DAW do you use?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Gareth

That should not be a problem for a laptop of the 1 GHz class.

The drives on the Tecra 9000 are easily exchangeable. Mine is 60 GB, Samsung.

No second Cardbus slot? You could connect USB or even eSATA drives that way. My Toshiba hasn't got USB 2, either. With the old flat RME Cardbus, it's easy to connect two cards.

Samplitude

Here's a nice tool that will tell you about your drive's capabilities: http://www.sesa.es/dl/dskbench.zip

I posted a pic. of my current set-up before.

(set-up in the Green Room of The Menuhin Hall for recording a piano recital CD - and I now have a flat-screen TV nonitor to replace the CRT in the pic.)

But I have just ordered one of these (NAGRA VI) to replace the FR-2.

I should get it in about 10 days or so.

Hey Daniel - No worries, I figured it may be a while before you check this, and besides, I'm not in a huge rush anyway!

Good news that the laptop should cope. Unfortunately it only has one cardbus slot

I do also have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600, which I may use. However this processor is a Celeron 697mhz. Enough? The advantage of this one is that it has two cardbus ports so I could use an external HDD. Although, I'd have to try to find an old RME cardbus interface since I currently have the later one, which has the chunky end.

Thanks for that application, looks great! Is there a similar thing to test processor speed? Little concerned that the Toshiba wouldn't cope, but would be good if I had some more options.

Thanks for the reply
Gareth

My first recording laptop was a 650 Mhz Celeron. Don't recall whether I ever tried 24 channels, but in general (and with a good PCI audio interface), recording as such doesn't require a lot of CPU. Try it out. Can't say how may channels you'll get across USB 2, and exchanging the internal drive for a faster one may be difficult on a Satellite. I did, and it was quite an experience...

total around 36 or so tracks..(we had a few more in the rehearsal for the band, and a few more in the crowd for the show), the third hd24 is a backup for "critical" tracks done via lightpipe out of the first hd24.....glad I had the backup too, b/c had a power surge at the end of set 2 and only saved on the backup drive!!!

I enjoyed all the pictures and stories and I finally got some time to upload some pictures myself.

In the first picture Maria is watching over the recordings. No need for backup I guess!
It was a recording session in the former church in Ruigoord, close to Amsterdam.
Now it is being used for contemporary music and art and I recorded a Latin Jazz combo.

The second picture is from a session in Antwerpen at the Zuiderpershuis. This time I recorded Ceumar, a Brazilian singer/songwriter with a Jazz combo including pianist Mike del Ferro

Yeh, 42 inch Protools.
The third picture is at my brothers office, where I have the possibility to record during the weekends. This picture is taken in one of the meetingrooms. The recordingroom itself is quit big and has a ceiling height of 4.8 meters (16 feet) and I made it work.

I don't record so much as I used to do, but I still enjoy the 6-8 session per year.

How 'bout some pics of packed-up gear... Here's two recent setups of mine.
The disadvantage of having so many cases is having so many cases...
The advantage is I can carry it anywhere on my own, even if there's no elevator. A big rack on wheels wouldn't allow that.
