Talking Mic shoot out !!! sample included

Hi everybody

Here is the sample of the double bass recorded with 4 different microphones
same room ,position,player,instrument,pre amp,cable .
There are short breaks between different mics so u have to listen carefully.
No post production is used ( no comp ,eq etc ... just plain mic signal )
Vote for one of them with 1,2,3 or four

I ll tell you later which mics i used.

Have fun

Wow! Nice shoot out! Very distinct differences

Definitely not 2--thin and harsh and kind of lacking meat and body. This is probably a mic I own...

Defnitely not 3--a bit tubby and indistinct, though I think you could work with this one more than 2

So it is 4 or 1...

I go with with number 1. Seems slightly more distinct and focused than 4 but still with ample warmth and body. This is probably NOT a mic I own...

Thanks for this! Good playing and useful comparison. I'll be sticking around for the results.

I think easily #1 wins. How it will fit in the mix will be very flexible cause its all there. good stuff

Number 1 is number 1

Mic one had the richest low end, and a really sweet top, got the full harmonic sound in there - so I gotta agree, it gives you the most to work with. 2 Had an interesting color (reminded me of a sort of middle eastern type of sound, but I can't quite reason why). 3 Had a really smokey sound to it, reminded me of live jazz sound but in a noiseless room - kinda flat on the low end though. 4 I felt was pretty flat all around, didn't seem to have as much dynamic response in it.

1 had the most low end, but there was some boomy resonance that I would be concerned might stick out in a mix. So I think I preferred 4, closely followed by 2. I do like the woodiness of 1.

Depends on the style of music it's destined for, but they all sounded a little "distant", like there was more room in there than I'd normally want... as I say, depending on the style. If it was for jazz, I'd be keen to try all of them (but especially 2) positioned a little closer.

have to agree with the masses here. #1, then #4. #3 is muddy and #2 is thin.

Might use #4 for a "vintage" jazz record sound.

List 'em! But do it down here, rather than in the original post. Then others can still play along.

BTW, here's what I want to hear: "Mic 1 is the MXL POS-II, bought at MF for $69.99."

Thnk you could arrange that?

I like number 1 best.

Number 2 has something that reminds me of my sE Z5600a. So I guess that it's either a sort of better chinese mic like sE makes, or perhaps a not very high-end tube mic.
Not that it is very bad or unusable, I actually like my 5600 quite a lot, it just has certain 'things' in the sound that is usually not found in the German or American mics, which you might like, or not, or not care about

I'm prepared to be completely wrong

My 2 cents. I found the load up around A ,Bflat to be least offensive on #2. It was of course the thinnest as well. If this is a room resonance related to mic placement then I prefer the sound of #4. If this is a hot spot on this bass maybe #2 would be right choice? They are all quite different and I'm very curious.

Good, so I was wrong

Nice, because of some clips I heard, and a lot of bad reactions about the TLM103, I wasn't even really prepared to give a TLM103 a chance at all, this is clear prove that it can be really useful. Although it might not be a so called 'real Neumann'.

I have a pretty decent microphone and DI collection.

14 out of the over 300 mics are Neumann TLM103s.
These mics must suck...

NOT!

Remember, you cannot believe everything you (read or) hear.

Make you own mind unless you're completely deaf; then (of course) you have to rely on someone elses idea of what's good or bad.

Now, back to the show...

The 414 sounds the most "classic" and instantly familiar to my ears, followed by the 184. No surprise there, eh? So, in a way the 414 is my favorite of the 4, even though it can seem a little bloated solo'ed and without any EQ... but combine that 414 with a km(1)84? Now that's a bass sound. I like the km mounted in the bridge pointing up. Some folks dig it 'looking' at the fingerboard. Blend to taste.

Admittedly, I'm no TLM 103 fan, but I didn't hate it here. I just thought it was a little funny, but totally workable. I'd rather have something else. Come to think of it, that's my review of the 103 in a nutshell!

As always, it sounded a bit scratchy and bright on top, bringing out plenty of string "clack" in this case. It's indisputably wide pickup pattern was in full effect here, and it picked up much more room sound than any of the others. In this instance, those two characteristics made for a Bass sound that was reminiscent of an old Charles Mingus recording: fairly articulate, fairly roomy upright bass. Not bad! ...Also, not good for everything!

Sorry Steve, I'm still not a fan enough to buy any for myself. I've used them a bunch in the past, and felt the same way everytime. Now I tend to leave them at the bottom of the locker when I'm working at outside studios.
