Question Which A/D converter for classical?

Hi!

I need a very clear and uncoloured 2 channel AD converter. I don't need sampling frequences over 96kHz.
My budget is restricted to $ 4,500.
Any advice?

Thank you!

screw the expensive converter......just get a sound devices 702 and upload from the 702 through usb.......that will probably sound better than most any converter,,,,so then buy the 4 channel sd if you have 4 gran......or the 702 and some sweet mics........a converter is silly for this application......in my opinion...,,,,,,....
oh,and the sd is way funner and more useful than any converter in the universe.......
but whatever.................

i mean if your recording you concert straight to a 702,then you don't need to spend all that money for a fancy converter because with that expensive converter your paying for really low latency, but this isn't an issue for you.because your not recording to a pre-existing track.......]]]] i just think you'd be happier......i would.......and am...with the 702.......i can record everything with this hooked up to logic and then i just bounce the file to my desktop and back to logic to fit into the other tracks....
the 702 is a converter but the wiring is alot closer together than an ordinary converter which i might think would create a more clear sound and better ,quicker performance.....and the sd is a high quality excellent performer........
but if you need converters only i'd go for lavrys for sure.........anything transparent and clear in that price range should do awesome......i would think in most cases..........

You should post this question in the "Remote Possibilties" forum; plenty of classical and high-end acoustic recordists over there.

Honestly I think you would be very happy with the Mytek 8x192.

If your recording classical music Lavry converters are a no brainer IMO.

One of the things i ascociate with Lavry is a three dimensional sound with alot of spacial detail. These converters can pick up the atmosphere/ ambience of the recording aswell as the sound of the instrument.

With 4500 I would make one and half steps forward and for 6000 buy Lavry Gold (negotiate a bit and you'll find dealers that will accept this price).
No brainer for classical and acoustic recordings, more complex music, better results with this converter.

I just saw that you're only looking for 2 channels. You could get a 2 channel Mytek and have a lot of money left over.

Lavry Blue?
Damn...heard today an audio example i know i can't use this with my D/A blah blah...... but it was awsome clear and very transparent. I really need to buy now one or an UA 2196 (great analogue sound).
I think the Blue fits better on classical cause it's on the cleaner side than the UA.

So what about a converter makes it good for classical?

I think of classical and I think people want accuracy, period.

No?

I have the Aurora 16 and it's super clean. With that much $ you can score the Aurora, the AES 16 card and your d-sub snakes! You would probably have some $ left over.

I purchased a new dCS 904 for 35% discounted last month from NorthStar at 3250EURO. If you have enough budget, try dCS 904 or 905, I cant find a better one for classical music after comparing it to Lavry and Prism.

dCS 905

Thank you Plush, Joram and WYQ99,

unfortunately there is no opportunity to test it in Vienna. So last Friday I have ordered a demo unit in England. I hope you are right!

The Axiom converter can be ordered in a two channel version with or withour micpres and would fall into your budget.
He will surely arrange for a demo.

+1 Sound Devices for clarity and un-colouredness. Nice portable unit too.

you should absolutely have a listen at the lake people stuff.
Willkommen bei Lake People Elektronic GmbH

If you need samples, listen to almost everything from Mr Sikkema, unfortunately only active on R/E/P forum.
Erik Sikkema | Ultra Linear Stereo Image (sorry if I link to a private person)

They are located at Konstanz, and the ceo, Fried Reim, is easy to deal with. I am only a normal user, but I can only recommand to not overlook the products.

hope this can help.

Why not get this:
m201 microphone preamplifier with A/D module

I have the m802 + AD option. Quite simply amazing.

Did you compare the converter with others?

aha... so you are the first person that I've heard having gone for the A/D option. which card do you have, the A or B card option? what was the MSRP of the card? like others, interested in a rundown on your perceived strengths and weaknesses of the card. If you needed to, is there some facility to run a line source through the m802 where it effectively becomes a straight A/D converter?

I recently worked on a classical gig with the AX24 (not mine, I was just assisting the ae) and thought that it was absolutely fabulous. Both the preamps and conversion were astounding. Very clean and transparent, but musical. Plus, it looked gorgeous!

I got a deal on a new second hand unit in Finland, so the MSRP was about zero
Line source : I did this test in the past with the 801R on zero gain (well actually -0.5 dB) and found it to be transparant. Alternatively, you could cut some wire and misuse an extra XLR output to make a line input + some kind of switch.
