Question First recording session how to place the mics and the band?

Hello,

I´m 18 years old and from Germany and new here. I play the trumpet since 7 years and two months ago my father founded a little jazz quintet (tenor sax, trumpet, piano, bass, drums).
Now we want to record some songs but unfortunately I have extremely little experience in recording, placing mics and so on...
We play in our cellar in a 6x6 meter big room.
I own a Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire connected with a Toshiba Satellite Athlon dualcore proc. with 1,8 ghz, 2gb ram and cubase le.
Furthermore I have an akg perception 200, an rode nt-1 and 2 sm57s. (you see no great stuff but I`m just starting )
I already practised a little bit and recorded some jazz standards with my trumpet but i have no idea how to place the band and the mics during the session so that I get a acceptable sound.
I also have a draught of the room but don`t know where to upload and how to link it to this thread.
So I would be very happy if you could give me some advise how to place band an mics.

Thanks for your help!!

Max

(Sorry for my bad English I´m still learning )

So, here is my suggestion:
trumpet akg perception 200
tenor sax rode nt-1a
drums 2 sm57
bass via amp into a line input
piano, it`s a electric one Yamaha Clavinova or something like this thus I can also record this over a line input

What do you thing about this idea?

Thanks,

Max

Max - that looks like a fine start. Others may adjust it some, but just give it a try. A lot depends on the room, too. Even when you are mic'ing closely. Try to have fun. True, Arbiet macht das Leben suess, but this is also Spielzeit. I predict you will have a lot of fun and may become a great recording engineer. We have a few Germans on the board who may jump in and help you.

Don't worry about your English, it is way better than my German. ;o)

Hey not bad! (your German I mean )
Thanks for your answer. I`ll try different versions and then decide which sounds best.
One other question. What is better for jazz drums? Sould I use the 2 sm57s as overhead mics or should I use one as overhead and the other one to record the snare?
Thanks for your help,

Max
