Yep. And insulating the shield, and ideally sleeving over the hot and cold terminals. Then leaving slack inside the connector (which you can now do because you've insulated anything that might short). Making up a really reliable XLR connection is more involved than people think, but well-worth it. Your average soldering job will probably be fine for six months, maybe a year... but under the conditions that live gear gets subjected to, all other bets are off. The other day I was on a gig using another company's mic cables, and we wasted a vital half an hour having to trace faults, which every time turned out to be down to a faulty mic cable... properly made mic cables would have saved so much time and stress. The problem with splitting mic pres these days is that a large proportion of them now have their analog outputs on a D-sub. No XLRs to make life easy, so some method of splitting "outside the box" is needed. |
