Talking Gear coming in and out of a very cold truck:

Hey slutz,

I worry about my gear constantly coming in and out of a very cold truck. I am pretty anal about the security of the gear. I do not leave the gear in the truck for any extended period but the back of the truck is really cold. The gear temperature must be around zero degrees fahrenheit sometimes before it comes inside. I also never leave hard drives in the cold at all. Instead, I keep them in the passengers seat with a seat belt around them. I am sure the condensation builds up on the gear once it comes inside though its never obvious. The first thing I always do is plug in and power the stuff up while I set up the rest of the rig. I realize that the distortion spec. gets worse when gear is cold or not fully warmed up. I wonder in the long run how bad this is for the stuff on a daily basis? ATI/ApogeeAd16X/CD burners/Schoeps/DPA/Neuman/Royer Mics and such. Should the stuff be checked over more often by a tech? Boston was cold, but Minnesota is a whole other kind of cold. Is there anything that I can do.

Thanks!
Cameron

Cameron,

I totally understand where you're coming from.
We all have the same issues with regard to gear coming in and out of a very cold truck and such.

Some Remotesters rigged up additional heating for the rear compartment. Even the belly bins. It's all about how much bread you want to put into a system like that.

If you're pretty anal about your gear you should look into heating the equipment.
What about the summer months? Would you consider installing air conditioning to handle the very hot environment during long trips?

You may want to rethink the type of vehicle you're driving because it sounds like you only need it when you're moving the gear from place to place. A vehicle with one big open space might be your best bet.

In the winter months Ii always run the gear for awhile before we put it to use.
I want to cook up all the condensation making sure it's completely dry before we run the gear.

Any way you want to look at it its part of doing business. A pair of C414TLIIs were ruined because we placed the warm mics back in the cold truck and forgot to dry them out or quickly remove them from the cold truck. Luckily they were cosmetically destroyed but still sounded okay.

All I can say is do everything you can to keep your equipment safe and on point.
Check and confirm your equipment is sound as much as you can.

Hate to post a link to a "competing" forum, but Klaus Heine has a sticky over on ProSoundWeb about storing mic's in cold climates:

PSW Recording Forums: Klaus Heyne's Mic Lab => How to Store Mics in Cold Climates

I imagine this applies to any equipment, though not all of it is relevant to a remote truck.

No worries, I'm not competing with anyone.

Good information sources are welcomed here!
