interesting - did these 3-ways replace a sub/sat combo, or just mains still with a sub.

If still using a sub, what are you using these days?

Back to TINY's point...

Now that I read what you say I do have to agree that a 15" speaker paired with a 1" driver IS a stretch.
The problem is the 1" driver, but they have other probs, too.
It really isn't the 15" drivers fault, but more that a 1" can't go down low enough.

Mostly the small throat and horn interface in general don't allow for a very long throw.

My friend has a nicely powered rig, but the tops are Yamaha 15" / 1" HF horns.
Although the rig has well over 6K of total power (the subs are 4K alone) the high end falls off REALLy quick.
I used his rig outdoors once at a big Bar-B-Q, corporate party and I set up F.O.H. about 65' from the stage.
The 1" horns could BARELY reach that far!
Still, on corporate/private party type events I set up F.O.H. rather close in order to keep the SPL under control.

All of this being said, I wouldn't carry a speaker array out to ANY decent sized gig that didn't have 2" HF drivers! The rig I mentioned above is my friend's and it was his band so to speak, so I had to use his rig and not one of ours.

1" horns are on 'toys" and you will outgrow them.

I used them a wopping total of TWO times! They have resided in my apartment stacked along the wall.I am SELLING them this year.If you are interested..PM me. BTW, I heard these boxes in a live outdoor venue and they sounded everything I thought they would.Perfect for venues of 2000 people.

EAW and JBL SRX and the Yorkville? Perhap those amps have really improved in the decade since I did this. I used QSC when I couldn't get Crown or Crest. Crests where really nice amps when they weren't on the bench as was often the case!

We had some 2 custom cabs from Ramsdall Audio. Each box was 3 way with 4 EV 18s, 2 JBL 10s and a JBL 2" Horn. Sat them on top of 3 more 18s per side for subs.

QSC is better now than they used to be.

Look at what the big rigs use.
Crown
No, not always, but more often than not.... Crown.

My good friend was part of a regional sound compnay that had lot's of Crest amps.
He can tell you all you'd ever want to know about repairing them.
We still have several of those twenty year-old Crest amps, but only a few are alive.

We have all Crown Macrotechs and Camco amps.
The Camcos are on the Nexo rig.
The Camcos are small (2 rackspace, but 3Kw per side!)
Four Camcos provide 24Kw of power in EIGHT RACK SPACES!
Class H amps are an amazing thing!

!

I didn't know that QSC amps were ever really bad - at least their professional lines.

I haven't beat up any Crowns since HK bought them out. They may well be just as good. The professional lines will probably be fine.

i dont know how 'pro' it is but, my qsc rmx 2450 crackles alot when you touch the volume knobs.

back to the original post: be sure to avoid the guys selling "digital audio" speakers out of the back of a van. theyre passive & cheap but die after a couple uses.
