Field Recording Headphones

Hi:

Any suggestions on a swell pair of headphones for field recording? I am looking in the neighborhood of around $100.

Or, if you want lots of isolation, look no further than the Remote Audio modified 7506. They may not ben the prettiest headphones but they sure do isolate well. same drivers as the 7506. Not cheap though. Worth every penny in my opinion.

Thanks! I'll look into the un-moded, as they seem to be a popular pick. I have heard a gripe that Sonys inaccurately represent (inflate) the low end? Somebody recently suggested
Sennheiser HD 280s as a flatter alternative, but I haven't tried them.

They do supposedly go down to about 10hz. Not sure if that is what people respond to, or if they think the bass is being exagerrated intentionally. Either way, they have been fine for dialogue recording on location. In noisy environments or when you just really need to focus on what is being recorded, the Remote Audio's do the trick for me.

The 280s are fine too. I don't own them but have tried them. I do have a pair of Sennheiser 600s that I really enjoy, but they are not for field recording. I'm sure you would be okay with either the Sony or Senns. Try before you buy though. In addition to sound quality, and isolation, comfort is also a factor. That can have a lot to do with the shape of your head, ears, etc.

Less expensive ($219) than Remote Audio but also with the 7506 drivers are the Ultraphones. They sound like Sony MDR-7506 and do a great job of isolation.

Extreme Isolation EX-29 headphones are available for $119. The provide great isolation but I found the sound unacceptable (no high end) and returned mine.

It seems like the Sony 7506 are the industry standards. I own a pair and they are comfortable enough and sound pretty neutral.

I'm sure the Sennheisers would also be good. I own their high end 650's and they are excellent cans.

Whatever you buy make sure they are a closed back design and fit comfortably.

Don't know if they are in your price range (probably not), but I use Sennheiser HD25.
They are really closed, sit ON your ears (wich some don't like, but I do, as it really closes off the outside sound, and they don't get caught in my long hair :-) ), and have what some might call a "big" sound.
Strong basses, and clear (maybe a little harsh for some?) highs.
BUT: This allows you to hear boom noise, wind, radio or light interference etc. very well.

Oh, and they're pretty compact, have a short cable on the right side, ideal for most field recording equipment or mixing desks (so that you don't fall over or roll over the cable with your chair).

Check them out too ;-)
They do have a "cheaper" version, the HD25 SP, but I've never really compared them.

John, thanks for the link to the Ulraphones. I had heard about those and then when I went to find them online, couldn't remember the name. They look like another good alternative.

I've used the 7506 for a few years now for production sound... and I do a lot of reality. The only crappy thing is they tend to fall of my head when we're running, ALL the time.

+1 for Sennheiser HD25 for field recording. They're a lot more isolated than Sony MDR 7506. I've used both of them a lot on the field, and found the HD25 more reliable. Specially in noisy production sound situations. They have much greater bass response, than 7506 and more detail on the high end as well. I find them less comfortable to wear, though. Tiring for long journeys.
