Question Electric Cello

You all seem very helpful from what I see... can you help me please :]

I'm an ameture cellist probably in the lower intermediate skill level. I've outgrown (skill-wise) my acustic cello and I have a hard time making a pleasent sound. Though buying a nicer acoustic cello is nice, I really desire a nice transportable electric that has a good sound and is relatively easy to distort. Distortion is important-I love the sound of an acoustic, but I really want to explore other sounds using the cello as a medium (as opposed to picking up electric guitar)

The question is this:

What do you suggest that is affordable and has most or all of those qualities.. I know the SVC-50 is good, but I don't want to limit my views. I've never played an electric before, but some of the models I see online are awkward shaped or much too high in price

Thank you so much for your help :]

You might want to consider a David Gage Realist pickup as a viable alternative to a secondary actual electric instrument. I've ried vitually every pickup out there and found that the gage is in a different category entirely. It's pickup element is extremely thin and actually rests underneath the right foot of the bridge over the bass bar. I was actually very aprehensive about the placement but found it didn't alter the sound or change the bridge position of my cello. It's quarter inch output is incredible even without a preamp and is ideal for going to any effects unit your heart desires. Take a look before buying an electric which won't sound half as good. Yep. It did seem to help a little, but it was more concerning the pre-amps and other elements I didn't quite understand. Not the actual cello.

And to the third poster:

I have heard this... but my current cello sounds so poor- will that make a difference to the pre-amp or the pickup?

I play in a band with electrified strings.... one of which is an electric cello. I can't remember the brand names, but the acoustic cello with a cheap pickup sounded way better (clean or distorted) then the electric cello.

That's my $.02

the problem is that i want different sounds. An acoustic cello can block out or mix with those sounds unless I get some kind of string mute :/

well more like a better sound. the sound is only so good on this cello- it's a factory model. Trust me: it sucks. I've played it to its full potential :\

thanks for the link! I'll check it out
