Microphone for Violin

Hello

This is my first post. Can some of you please recommend a great microphone for the violin?

Budget < $200.00

Thanks a lot

oy, $200

maybe a c1000 or a sm81.

The sm81 will work fine if the mic is far enough away, i.e. 2-3ft above, and you don't have a bright thin preamp.

i'm not a fan of the octavas....

You could probably pick up a used Shure SM-7 (not the SM-57 btw) for that. If it has a peaky high mid (which the SM-7 does not), it's going to be shrill.

Beyer M260, or M500NC - both are about that price (used) and would work well for that, and/or percussion/brass/sax - not quite one-trick ponies, but nice, dark sound for scratchy instruments...

If you need a mic right away, I'd say an Oktava MC012: less than a hundred bucks, and I'd venture you'd be doing OK if you cut (EQ) a bit of the brightness - also mic back a bit, and not directly on the bow...

YMMV,

Wink

Electro-Voice EV RE15 is reputed to be a good choice. The high end roll-off around 13 Khz helps tame any screechiness.

I'd rent a KM84 before I spent 200 on a mic for that application.

I'll second the used Beyer ribbon mic for that app. Used M500's often sell for $199 on eBay. Good luck!

no way on the c1000, i think. it's a bright, thin mic, and the violin is a bright, sometimes thin instrument. i have found use for my c1000 on viola, as viola can sometimes be a little throaty and lacking focus.

For under $200, I like the MC012s pretty well.

Anything that's smooth sounding on top. The Baby Bottle comes to mind, so do things like an R-121 and a 77DX, all of which are over $200. How about a used RE-20? Regardless, get the mic away from the instrument, I'll start about two feet over the players head and move it around from there.

I was thinking along the same lines as Jay Kahrs on the Baby Bottle. I bet you could score one for under $300 used on Ebay if you could up your budget by $100.
