Talking Costa Rica Location shoot

Hi everyone. I'm going to be recording sound for an outdoor show in Costa Rica and need some tips on how to pull it off. I've gotten word that there will be 12 contestants and 5 cameras filming with me and another guy doing sound. I know we need to get more gear but i'm not sure where to start.

As of now I have three Sennheiser 112 lavs and a ME67 for the boom. Going into a sound devices (4 channel) mixer followed by a sound devices recorder.

I know I need a lot more lavs but I'm trying to figure out how to efficiently capture everything. For instance, when we have all 12 contestants together. A lot of the filming will be in boats and through jungles so mobility is key. Thanks for any input. thumbsup

Sounds like there's little time to experiment, set up, or mix the stuff, and it's gonna be aired on TV, maybe with lots of music underlying.
So the key is not just being mobile, but also being fast, and being willing to not tweak for details nobody will hear. It needs punch though.

Get a 416 for your boom, and a good zeppelin/dead cat windshield too. And get a good boom, sounds like there's gonna be lots of fast action going on, and you don't want handling noise. A well-trained boom op will also be helpful when quick moves are required.
Lav'ing some contestants won't work, lav all or none. Lav'ing everybody means a 12-ch mixer and someone operating it.

These reality type shows are usually a miced presenter, all action boomed, and parts where a winner is selected, or an isolated bit with some contestants> miced contestants..
Tricky stuff though.. I hope the producers/director understand sound... but propably not.. :(

Thanks for the thoughts. I think we might film with groups of four. So I was thinking of putting 4 lavs through the mixer panned right with the boom panned left going straight into the recorder. Then if I get another boom set up for my partner we can have two seperate recording units to cover different areas. I don't think I'll have time to sit down with a sound cart so this seems like the best plan to me.
