Question Multiband Compressor

I believe I need a decent multiband compressor. I'm having trouble taming the low end of a baritone sax in a live setting. Of course, budget is an issue, and if it's two channels then all the better.

Without you mantioning the Budget

I assume that you've bumped it already - BSS DPR 901 (Costs about 1400$)

It is a reliable/have a decent sound and might do the task due the fact that it can work as 1 Input - 4band or 2 Inputs - 2band so you're covered for several situations.

Best regards, Noam.

That looks like a nice unit. For two channels that would be the top of my budget, but I could probably swing that. Thanks for the suggestion, and I welcome any more.

Well, you can use a crossover and a couple of compressors.
That has worked very well in the past for me.
It's what we used before the availability of multiband compressors.

Personally I wouldn't be happy in using a multiband compressor in a live setting for either tracking or the PA sound. I would look at different miking/eq options firstly, respectfully, it sounds like you are maybe trying to cure the symptoms not the cause.

I bought a pair of TC Electronic Triple C's when they were being unloaded by Sweetwater some years ago, and they have continually saved my butt on keys and DJ rigs in live situations.

Really, I would not be afraid to use one. The BEST frequency-specific compressor is the BSS 901 v2... but please indulge me for the question:

Why have you not been able to solve this problem either by changing the mic, the mic placement, or by EQ & compression?

You're right, that's the question that needs to be answered first. I'm not planning on buying any gear before I know that I need it, only taking suggestions on what I should be looking for if indeed it is needed. I have been using a 421, but tonight switched to a good ole 57. It seemed to work better, and maybe just because of the shape of the microphone. I'll see how that works out and stilck a compressor on it just to see what I can get out of it.

It might be worth checking out an RE20 or even a AKG 202, be cause of the design you will probably get less proximity effect that may be the source of your problem.

I completely agree that it's because of proximity effect. I'll see if I can find an RE20 to try.
