Those OnStage bags don't hold up for very long. But they're cheap enough to replace every other gig or so if need be.

seriously? i have 3 of them that have been solid for the last 2 years. of course the zippers may go if you over stuff them, but if you keep it reasonable, these things are very durable.

another inexpensive solution, but not suitable for airline travel: go to the local Army surplus store and check out their super heavy duty duffel bags. I have a 4ft tall black model that is made out of the heaviest canvas fabric I have ever seen. Super strong, but the bag itself can't weigh even one pound. I fill it with +/- 50lbs worth of stands and I haven't noticed any wear or tears. FYI - for all of the Atlas type stands with heavy iron bases (round or triangular) I unscew the bases and carrry the tubes in the duffel. The stand bases all stack into a single milk crate that ends up weighing an insane amount, but the crate goes right onto a hand cart. A midsize briefcase holds all of the shockmounts, clips, suspensions and other mic hardware - pretty much everything that does not fit into the hard cases that the mics come in. So, ignoring the mic themselves, everything needed to place the mics fits into either: the duffel (stands), the milk crate (metal bases) or the briefcase (mounts, clips, susensions, etc.) |

I have had great success fitting four standard tripod style mic stands in the bag that comes with the folding camp chairs you can find on the cheap at outdoor stores everywhere. You know, the ones that fold up long-ways with drink holders on both sides...REI and others make far more pricey ones, but you can get the cheap ones all over the place. Got mine at Fred Meyer for $6 each. I can get eight stands in two bags slung over the shoulder. Just alternate two with legs in and with two boom in and four stands fit righty tight. I like to use more smaller cases for my rig as I have to carry it all myself and my back is not good these days...

That only holds 4 stands. I'm glad it works for you but I typically need 10-12 tall booms and 6-10 shorties.

| I typically need 10-12 tall booms and 6-10 shorties. Well, there is no way that all of that will fit into one enclosure, at least not one that can be lifted by a human. You might find a road case that will hold all of that, but be prepared to hire a crew to move the case for you. If I needed to move that many stands (by myself) the only practical option would be to split them up between at least 4 bags - otherwise you will end up with something that can't be lifted. |

I have a Canford Mic Stand Bag that holds 4 K&M stands and can carry quite a bit of other stuff like cables in it too. I don't have a road-crew so three of these would suit my limited weigh-lifting abilities much better than an unliftable single case of 12 stands. The OP asked about a soft-case too - I think you'd struggle to find a soft-case for 12 stands let alone be able to lift it!

Well, that's not true. Those Golf bags can hold 12 stands. We also have Beato cymbal stand bags that can hold 12 stands. We have had them in use for over ten years and they are still hanging in there with not even a busted zipper. They lived in Jethro's belly bin; now-a-days, they live in TBM since 2003.

Now about this whole "nicknaming" the cars thing... I had a friend with an old VW bus he called "Otto"....

You can easily put 6 normal stands in that canford bag. I can carry a bag in each hand, 12 stands in total, but not too far. The K&M 20800 also fits in that bag, without boom attached. For the really big stands we have soft K&m stands (not necessarily made for mic stands), but they are a lot less solid than the Canford bags. |

| I don't think they asked Otto to hold anything... eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, achtung! Here's a rolling mike stand I crafted when I despaired of finding a rolling golf club bag... holds seven stands... |

That looks like a good solution when there is lots of room in the vehicle. Here is something I just ordered with air travel in mind: NEW Golf Clubs TRAVEL CASE Bag HARD SHELL PROTECTION - eBay (item 110394604634 end time May-27-09 20:23:15 PDT) Rich |

This thread is a really good one for sorting out the mic stand carry case options--thanks to Steve and everyone else who contributed! It was a tough choice, but I'm ready to pull the trigger on the On-Stage SSB6500 Speaker/Microphone Stand Bag : On-Stage SSB6500 Speaker/Mic Stand Bag from zZounds.com! My intent is to put 3 boom style mic stands, 2 posts without base for pedestal style stands, and Manfrotto (3336?) tripod. That should fit fine from what I read in the thread(?). Sounds like there may be room for maybe one more boom style stand or 2-3 posts for pedestal style stands? Anybody with clever ideas for transporting a few of the pedestal bases? This was SOOOO helpful... |

Ultimate MC05B New Round Base Microphone Stand from zZounds.com! I don't carry those on the road, too much weight, and when I take them on gigs they go in my van assembled. Used to carry the bases in a milk crate, but that is so unweildy. If not that, waht do you mean by pedestal? L

Looks like the ticket. IF you need to carry the heavy ones around. I only use K&M tripods, matter of taste. L |

Just ordered a Rock N Roller to haul everthing around, and went with the R8 vs R6 for that same reason...rigs bloat over time...quickly.... I'm trying to figure out how to get my 24 channel rack (post 381 in Post pictures of your portable recording equipment), 24 channel mic splitter that is either going in a Pelican 1560 or vintage Samsonite 21" luggage, these mic stands, and cables, mics (juty still out on the best mic case), and everything else in my medium and/or large Porta Brace Bag. Getting the gear organized is at least half the battle!!! This actually is a "fun" part--getting everything in a well organized carry rig to make it easy to pack, transport, and deploy the gear.

I learned the hard way of not having extra stands, cables, and such at a gig. Nothing worse than seeing a micing opportunity that was unexpected, and be lacking a cable, stand, adapter, appropriate mic, or whatever. A seasoned pro told me to TAKE EVERYTHING, and I'm working from that premise.

Here's a hint, then I need to sign of this thread. We carry speaker cables, mic cables, mics (in their pouches) and power cables and snakes in rolling carry-on type suitcases - with wheels, they roll in and line up along the wall nicely, and we get them at the flea market for 15 - $20 each. They pack nicely in the van, and my dimunutive partner can roll them in and out two at a time while I load up the van. We hardly ever use straight stands, all booms here, FWIW. Best luck! L |

I'm relatively new to this, so you old pros have all the tricks figured out. For the mic stands, I'll stick with one of the thread options, unless something else pops up. I learned that a few hours on the forum finding other's solutions saves money and time in the long run. My 24 channel rig is in a nice custom wood 2 piece case, which WORKS, but was not the best choice for taking it out of the living room. Anyway, thanks for the input. Plenty more mistakes and false starts coming, but far fewer and far between with the help of this group.

This may make you feel better, might not - When I was a teenager in the youth symphony, the local classical radio station would record and broadcast our concerts. Only two mics in stereo, but - it too two burly techs to carry in each HALF of the tape machine (Ampex 351), and go back for heavy cases of mics and stands one at a time. I now do the equivalent with a small shoulder bag containing a Sounds Devices 4 track, a briefcase with mics and cables, and the tall mic stand in the other hand. Old farts talk... Best to you! L |
