Talking Audio Inside... Tape Feedback from Colts-Patriots Game LISTEN FOR THE GLITCH!!

Listen to the audio at the link below:

This is one of the biggest stories in sports right now, and as audio engineers, I figured we could all listen and figure out who is telling the truth.

The NFL is investigating charges that the Indianapolis Colts piped in noise during their defeat Sunday to the New England Patriots

CBS is saying the weird audio moment was a "tape feedback loop", and it was on their end.... Now, I've never heard a tape feedback loop during any other professional sporting event. And the Colts have been accused of this in the past.

It could be some kind of feedback loop, or it could be a loop that was piped in to the PA... maybe it was via mics on the field that caused the feedback into the PA (which would have been against the rules).

So, did the Colts pipe this into their PA system or was this an "audio glitch" by CBS.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

Hey Tony, hard to tell. The source is def some mics or the sum of x amount of mics picking up the crowd. Whether it was in the house or just fed back into it self is tough to figure out right now. (could be hot referee mic). One thing I noticed is when the feed is cut off there is no inevidable reverberation in the stadium so I think it was internal. Simple mistake probably. You would think it would be more a common mistake with the house as if the crowd feed was bussed acidently to the mains, but there is a seperate TV audio, radio, live, ...etc soundman you know, there isn't some dude running a single PM5D for EVERYTHING!! allthough you never know these days.

I haven't watched or listened to clips yet because I'm at work and we only have dial up here but I can say I heard something that seemed off last night. My friend and I were sitting on the couch watching the game and at one point we heard something that sounded like fake crowd noise and my friend looked at me and said with a chuckle "didn't that sound like they were piping in noise?". It sure did to me.

I've said for years the Colts cheat, now we may have proof!! J/K, definitly interesting though. First the Pats are caught cheating, now the Colts possibly. Makes you wonder about these seemingly undefeatable teams.

This is a typical replay loop.
I cannot easily understand the speech but it seems a simple mistake by the sound engineer.
Slowmotion playout servers, normally used in sport tv productions, are usually fed with the the audio clean feed, the international feed with effects and crowd microphones. They have a latency derived from the recording of the audio+video feed.
If I, by mistake, put "on air" one of those machines while I'm producing the clean feed, the same that I mix with the speech to produce a full program mix, and the machine is recording but not in play I obtain exactly that effect.
This could be an explanation, the simplest I can find.
Sorry for my english...

The input is being looped to the output but with some delay from the evs machine..
(or tape machine, whatever, sounds the same anyway..)
