Talking Lordi -- Live from NYC

We were contracted to record Lordi live from the Fillmore NY @ Irving Plaza this past Monday, 10/29/07 for a video shoot that shall be available via Woozyfly.com.

They're opening for Type O Negative on this tour.

JJ French from Twisted Sister performed with Lordi on the tune "It Snows in Hell".

For the folks that may not know about Lordi, they're the band from Finland that won the 2007 European-Songcontest. They're sort of like Kiss meets Gwar -- Checkout the video to see what I'm talking about.

We provided The Bread Mobile and crew for this four camera shoot.
Jon D'Uva, Robert Carvell and Thomas Bishop were on hand while I recorded, engineered and mixed this event.

The mix for this streaming video was done on the spot without any gates or major outboard gear.

I used a rack of dBX (160RM, 165A, 162 and 160X) compressors for about eight inputs and an SSL FX384 stereo compressor for the two buss.
A couple of Kurzweil Rumours handled the reverb duties.
Two Midas Venice 320s were strapped together for the live 2mix.
No outboard EQ were harmed in the production of this mix.

We didn't position any of the mics except our four audience mics.
We provided Sennheiser MKH416s for this task.
We got to position the two drum overheads since the FOH engineer didn't need them.
I would have picked different mics, but since it was "combat" audio style of recording we needed to get in and get out quickly and we made it happen perfectly!

We pulled it off thanks to my awesome crew mates and the great crew at the Fillmore NY.
Lordi's crew were a serious help too.

All in all the client, the band's management were very happy.
I wish I can say the same...

We didn't have a set list or any information to help us deal with the live to 2mix situation.

After the show, we played back the tracks and rebalanced it a bit.
IMO, it sound light years better then the 2mix you will hear if you click on the link.
Even though we didn't handle the mic'ing and such, the tracks sound very good to our ears.
It will surely be remixed when they release the DVD of this performance.
I look forward to that for sure.

If you're interested in more information, just post your questions here.

Since I was the recording engineer, I didn't get a chance to take a lot of pictures.

I love simple cable runs and tie ins...

We parked on the corner of 15th & Irving place.
Our snake and power runs were under 100'.

Jon Baker (from Irving Plaza) had installed a third split feed from their splitter by SR MON world to the SL dressing room.

We tied into their shore power in the closet of SL dressing room.
That night that dressing room was used as SL GTR world...

Here's a shot of MON world and FOH.
The third shot is looking down on the stage from MON world.

I'm not sure what you meant by "some real working," but we enjoy real work, especially when it's (real) easy work...

Short Cable Runs; No Bare Wire Power Tie In; Mics, Cables, Stands and Split provided by the house. All we had to do was setup our four audience mics and PTZ camera.

Did you get a chance to checkout the Lordi video at Woozyfly.com?

The concert is split up in four parts.

Yeah, if I only had a set list with some cues and such -- everything would have felt a lot smoother for sure.

I agree about the "pushing gain" issue with the visuals...

When folks ask me how do you produce a great video; I reply, "It's all about the lighting."
Lighting is everything when it comes to video production.

IMO, they did a decent job considering they did not have the budget for more (wash) lighting for video.

I met them before they put on their outfits so...

Not really, but I was (kind of) afraid coming into this gig with the (venue's) PM never returning any of my numberous phone calls...

This person never called or did anything to advance the gig with me. I'm serious!
Even when my client and the GM from the venue asked this person to call me, it never happened.
I didn't even meet him when we were there for the twelve hour stretch.
To be honest, I really didn't want to meet the fool at that point anyway...

Many folks that have delt with him told me this is this persons normal approach to production management.
I mean, major acts and crew have been jammed up by this person. Crazy stuff right?

If it wasn't for the club's awesome crew this show would have been totally frightening for sure.

The show presented in four parts.
Parts 2 through 4 sound better.
Part 1 was (sort of) my soundcheck.

As of this post the Lordi -- Live from NYC streaming video got nearly 150,000 hits within the first 24 hours it was launched.

The main page got over 500,000 hits in that same time period.

Not too bad for a company that just launched their website two weeks ago.

Very cool Inti and thanks.

We had a lot of fun on that gig.

And this is your first post, so welcome to the forum.

Maybe you should sign in on the "role call" thread.

I know the drummer and one of the technicians of Lordi.
Good to know that they've been any help at all!

On a side note, I was considered as the keyboard player for the band after the previous keyboardist left.
Mr. Lordi wanted a female keyboardist though...

I guess the band is back in Finland.
They're about to start working on their new album, Right?

I think they're busy working on the film "Dark Floors".
Apparently some music from the film will probably be released on a single or something at some point. I think we'll all know when that happens!

Honestly, I don't know if it was a blessing in disguise that I didn't get picked as the keyboardist.
Ah, well...

Jussi,

If you don't mind me asking; why is that?

Nothing in particular. Just that I'm leaning more and more towards the "other side" of the glass and I'm very happy with my band at the moment.
There would have been some changes to my life that I probably wouldn't have been ready to make - at the time.
Who knows about these things? Maybe it would have been the best thing ever???

But some of the stories I've heard make me go hmmm...
(no, I won't share them! )
