Talking If this isnt the best sounding jazz album ever !!!

So Wynton Marsalis "From The Plantation to the Penitentiary" .Probably one of the greatest sounding jazz cds ever . Sounds unreal, really great. Here are the names of the cats who did it :

Recorded on June 28 & 29, 2006 by DAVID ROBINSON at Right Track Studio A509, New York, NY
Assistant engineers: JAY GOIN, HYOMIN KANG & ALEX VANGUER
Additional recording by YURON ALDEMA at AM Studios, New York, NY
Mixed in October 2006 by PATRICK SMITH at Glenwood Studios, Burbank, CA
Mastered on November 17, 2006 by LEON ZERVOS at Sterling Sound, New York, NY

I also like Jay Newlands work (Charlie Hadens Land of the sun,Nocturne, Beyond the missouri Sky etc ...)

Sorry I haven't heard it yet, but better than Kind of Blue? Time Out? Duke Ellington's 80th Birthday Concert? Or a few dozen other one could mention...

How is it better, can you give some idea of why we shoudl check it out? Is it the music, the sound, the mix, or what? I'm not doubting you, but not having heard it I'd need some incentive...

Duke Ellingtons 80th birthday concert? I guess that was recorded in 1979, five years after Duke died.

70th. Gee, just a typo. The Duke was very much alive on that recording, one of the best Lps I own...

I sampled the one mentioone dhere and am not impressed, but that is just MP3s. I'm still wondering what is so great about it - tempt me!

This is Wynton's CD.

I'm working with Wynton all this week. I must admit that I haven't heard the new CD yet.

But as far as I'm concerned, the best sounding jazz record are ones recorded all-tube, all-analogue, played back on a fine turntable.

Analogue baby! That's the realshit!

LOL. That's funny but true.

I'm the guest conductor of the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra this week. The Concerts feature the music of Gil Evans.

Andy,
Would love to hear that.

I agree Wynton Album is amazing.
Katsu is also amazing engineer on Terrell Staford's new release.
Check it out if you can.

Wynton collection live at Vanguard is also fantastic. For digital it sounds so warm and personal. Compare that to Live at Blues Alley back in the day. That album sounds like S#@! now. I remember being excited about that one.

Andy , I agree about turn table. I was at AES convention and saw some awesome DJ turntables. I am looking into some real high end ones .I have been going through my brothers vinyl collection - I forgot the vastness of our collection.

Anyone familiar with BBC TV series Jazz 625 ?? What incredible sound!!!!
As much as I have complained - the old towel and mic in bass bridge sounds killing here! Video - You Tube Jazz Highlights

Good luck Andy.

Jazz @ Lincoln Center records all of their gigs. I'll try to get a copy of this one. Their live gigs are recorded with a Decca tree and spot mics. Not the mics I would use at a studio for a record date, but they get a good sound in there. The often have TLM 170s for the reeds, 47 fet for the trombone section and Royer 122 on the trumpets. The use those newer AGK 414 on the piano and drums and a KM184 for the bass. This concert will also have a tuba, 3 french horns, 2 bassons and other woodwind doubles in the saxophone section. I'll report back later with the mic lineup, if anyone gives two schitz.

I'll look on Thursday. I don't think they are anything "slutty" like an M50. They might be TLM 170s or some other multipattern LDC.

I've had it. Played it. yawned. sold it. I don't like this wynton register, sorry. Ranking this as high as any of the greatest jazz cds is... :-)

I can't comment much for the sound quality though. I was listening to it musically, which is the most important thing to me anyway. Somehow I didn't get it. Sound didn't impress me but I wasn't listening for that, so it may actually be great!

put on the dvd-a from Pat Metheny's Imaginary Day album (1997) and listen to it in stereo or surround. Now THATS a great sounding jazz album that would blow you away.

Their latest effort The Way Up is sonically also very good and extremely detailed.

There are albums where you just dont pay attention on the tech stuff .the music is simply so great and deep and u dont mind somebody is eating or a barman is making a lot of noise (bill evans at village vanguard 1 &2 ) or you dont even mind hearing that ugly bass pick up ( george shearings confirmation enja rec. with Mraz and Elvin ,"we will meet again" by bill evans or carter with tony and tom harel on "etudes" ) just to name a few . There are also the recordings where the music isnt really your cop of coffee but is recorded and mixed so great that you cant stop listening to it Patricia Barbers "Verse" for ex. . And of course there are recordings where everything is simply magic ,music and the production ( Charlie hadens "Land of the sun" "Beyond the Missouri sky" "Nocturne" Patituccis "One more angel",Anuar Brahems ECM recording wir Dave Holland and John Surman .......
I am more Brandfords then Wyntons fan musically to be honest , but when i heard this Wyntons record i was blown away with the sound of it ....

I dig it!

This album is a piece of work, for sure!
The room sound is just amazing. The tones, very pleasant.
Actually I think it´s the best jazz album i´ve ever heard in terms of sonics.
The songs are great and everybody is playing great...
What else can I say?
Enjoy it and learn thumbsup

I ran into Delfeo Marsalis today and told him about this post. He said his favourite sound of the last bunch of Wynton records was "Magic Hour". That was Wynton's first Bluenote CD recorded analogue at Right Track A509 (now Legacy).

David Robinson is mainly a live engineer.

It's a very natural sounding recording...you can hear the room and it's enjoyable that way...the engineer did fine job and Wynton's trumpet sounds very natural...
whether it's a great jazz cd though is a matter of taste..for me fairly forgettable..and the Wynton rap???!!!....

I ran into David Robinson last night and told him about this thread. He was shocked, to say the least.

Anyway, I still haven't heard the CD, but it was recorded at Legacy (the old Right Track). I know that room well. You can't help get a good sound in there. Wynton doesn't use headphones or isolation, so you get allot of room sound and friendly leakage.

BTW, Mike Brecker's final album was recorded there with Joe Ferla engineering. I might be interesting to "A, B" those recordings to compare. The Brecker album was done with the piano and bass in the main room and the saxophone and drums in separate booths. It's also a great sounding CD, but it begs the question: "Why bother with Legacy's big room if you're just gonna isolate everyone?

Very good point.
We should ask Joe about this one.

Hey Guys,

Michael wanted to be separated so that he would have the option to correct mistakes. He passed away before he got a chance to address this, although no one thought he made any mistakes. The rest of the band also wanted this same option. Separating everyone was very important to the producers and musicians. The studio was chosen because it has four booths. There are very few studios with this option. I personally wish those booths sounded better, but this is the world I live in. Like I've said before, separating musicians is so common with the majority of sessions I do that the real engineering challenge becomes making the CD sound like everyone was in the same room. I try to do this.

I have to do this allot for TV underscores. I'll often record woodwind, sting and brass players separately and mix in MIDI (fake) percussion. In the mix I'll add Altiverb to make it sound as if we're all in the same room. A room simulator (often set on a reverse stereo image) coupled with a regular reverb works well.

I've used this trick on jazz dates recorded in smaller rooms like Sear A. When done right you can fool people into thinking the stuff was done at Columbia 30th street or something.
