Talking Gig report: Alter Bridge live from the Electric Factory

I'm going to post a gig report for a remote we're doing this weekend: A live radio broadcast & recording with the band "Alter Bridge" from the Electric Factory club here in Philadelphia. I'll try to take a bunch of pictures and try to create a timeline of what happens when & how.

Figured I'd start the thread today to see if anyone has any questions before the gig?

If you're in the Philly area, and would like to stop down, shoot me a PM.

When is the show? I'm working Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but may be done early Sunday afternoon and could possible zip over from Wildwood. I'd love to come check it out.

Another oldies show at the convention center? Does that room still sound like ass?

bishopthomas...shoot me an email and maybe we can hook up. I'd rather have guests on location in the afternoon before the broadcast madness starts up. We'll probably be on site from 12 noon on. michael@indrestudios.com

How did you guess? Tommy Rydell, Little Anthony, The Chantels..... Don't ask me to give any names of the songs, but that's who will be there. You're welcome to come check it out if you want. You can hear how sorry this room sounds first hand.

Michael, thanks for the response. I'll let you know as I find out more info about my gig Sunday.

Spent a few hours at the shop yesterday getting ready for this remote. Here's a pretty standard check list we use before leaving for a gig:

Confirm & replenish expendables (CDRs, Client Hard Drives, Gaff Tape, Board Tape, Sharpies, Printer paper)
Confirm gas in the truck
Create ProTools session
Create RADAR session
Create Yamaha console template
Sweep and wipe down truck
Confirm details with our crew (parking, attire, schedule)
Confirm details with band production manager (times, number of people on our crew)
Confirm detials with band FOH engineer (input lists, splits, mic choices / substitutions)
Confirm details with venue production manager (times, parking, power, loaders, meals)
Confirm schedule with client (in this case it's a radio station)
Confirm uplink needs with client (in this case we feed their ISDN codec box)

The Post Game Wrapup...

The gig went well, couldn't have worked with a nicer bunch of guys - both the band and their touring crew we're really top notch. Props to Pete & Frank from Clair Brothers (Mon Engineer & FOH) and John, the local FOH engineer with the club.

I will post a time line of what happened when, but for now here are a few pictures:

For this gig all the stage lines hit the Clair Bros. splitter first and they gave us a set of XLR tails for our rig. Not our first choice, we usually kick and scream to be "first in line", but when you're dealing with a touring stage rig that is pre-loomed, into multi-pin stage boxes - the interface can be a bit of a challenge. Room mics went straight into our box.

FOH - Digi D-show console
The band's touring rig consists of a 64 input HD4 recording rig that runs off of the house console, they track every night into Pro Tools.

Monitor engineer Pete Healey at the band's PM5D. The Clair rig had a wireless tablet PC running Studio Manager software so Pete could walk all around the stage tweaking mixes - all wireless. "Who's going to drive? Oh, I'll drive"

Thanks Maber, I worked pretty hard to assemble a streamlined platform, in a clean open space. After 10 years of running a commercial studio, I took a step back and realized my favorite part of the business was remote recording. We closed the studio last year, and haven't looked back.

Though I don't particularly like Alter Bridge, Myles Kennedy's voice is just incredible. I remember when I first heard him in his old band Mayfield Four, he sounded like Chris Cornell's voice was making sweet love to Jeff Buckley's voice. If anyone has the chance, take a listen to the Mayfield Four song Summergirl, and check out the notes Myles hits at the end. Yowza!

I'm with you about Myles Kennedy! Such a great voice, and tasteful guitarist too. Their first record "Fallout" is definitely worth a listen if you like great sounding, super rock production.

We had the pleasure of hosting a couple days of production rehearsals for The Mayfield Four years ago at our studio, I was totally blown away by him and that band. It's a shame that the project went down in flames.

Myles, and the whole gang from Alterbridge, we're super nice on this gig - zero attitude and super easy to work with. Always makes for a much better day all 'round.

Yeah, it really is a shame about Mayfield Four. "Fallout" is an excellent record, as was "Second Skin." Damn his voice is great...
