Question acousitc guitar question

hmmm - i have to record a duet of a flute with acoustic guitar as accompaniment. i usually record acoustic guitar with the mics very close, like 10-12" out from the 12th fret. however, for this somewhat classical material, the flute needs to be miced at more like 3-4 feet out. when you mix a close miced guitar with a more distantly miced flute, the guitar is too much in your face, and the flute sounds like it is far behind the guitar - not good.

if i pull the mics away from the guitar to 3 or 4 feet, or try to mic the duet with a stereo pair from a few feet away, the sound of the guitar is quite dull and diffuse. is there any way to get a good clean guitar sound when you are micing from any kind of distance? or how would you mic this duet to get a good balance (so they sound like they are playing together in the same space) and still get a clean guitar sound? thanks.

i'd do both close & far, then find a balance in the mix.

funny you should ask... not 'cause i got an answer but because i was just trying something like that this morning...

i was just playing around and trying to add flute parts to a song i'm working on and i realised that i don't want to be too close to the mic... it's my first time trying and i'm not totally happy with the results... yet.

i'm sure you already thought about it but would you be able to record the musicians separately?

peace!
