| Lives for gear | Limiting on Vox live....
I'm wondering how you guys are handling Lead Vox live. I just want to protect from scorching tape (da78) on lead vox. this is a 7 piece latin funk outfit, smallish venue. I don't want to add any color anywhere..just keep away the nasties. I used an 1176 on the last gig but was not digging using it as a comp... suggestions? thanks craig

The club I work at has fairly crappy compressors in the rack, the least offensive is a dbx 266XL. One of these days we'll get better stuff in there that matches the rest of the rig. Maybe something like an Aphex Expressor, Symetrix, BSS or RNC would do well, something that you can pummel without hearing the GR.

Yeah, there's a lot of color in those 1176LNs. Like Jay said, an Aphex Expressor, BSS or RNC would do well. Maybe even the newer version Klark Teknik compressor. Man, I wanna get a rack of RNCs one of these days...

I actually have a pair of RNC's that don't get much use, maybe I'll take them out on the gig and give it a go . Thanks guys! | |

another suggestion/reminder: Remember that with 78s you are fine recording with quieter levels for safety.... also, if you haev a spare track, you can run the vocal down twice, one path set hotter then the other, this will cost you another channel, but it can be really handy

FWIW, the one thing that almost always seems to need compression in a live mix are the vocals. At least from an FOH standpoint.

For my live shows, I strap a Behringer Tube Composer compressor across both the monitor and FOH channels. A Lower ratio 2.5:1 constantly compressing (GR= 10+ dB) sounds great to most of my clients and really "spreads the love around" when u engage alot of tube "warmth".thumbsup I also set the limiter section up to catch things like mics hitting the ground and extraneous pops, etc. I know im a bit of topic but hey, sorry i guess |

If you're not doing the FOH and taking splits then I would forgo the compression untill you can hear its effect, you may not be able to undo it. Compression and EQ for FOH or monitor won't be the same as what you'd want for a recording, only under the most controlled situations would you be able to dial in the right setting. You should be able to record in good enough quality not to have to slam the meters, the best suggestion was the 2 tracks one -3 or -5 from the prefered track. If one pops you can alway edit the other in. I do this when hunting sound effects, one channel -10, but sometimes I'm recording very surpising one time only no soundchek available material.
