Question ISDN for voiceover

Hey guys, i'm looking for some info on getting into an ISDN setup for doing remote voiceovers, (as in, we'd have talent in different places recording in realtime, with us here in the studio.)

Do any of you have any experience in this? I have no idea what sorta of hardware/software these setups require, and haven't had any luck finding any info online.

Clue me in someone!

thanks for any help.

Search for "aptx isdn" or "ISDN Source Connect".

The first one is the best.

Good luck!

Figure out who you're dealing with most often and find out what their encoding system is, then use that codec. I used to have Dolby when I worked in NYC, now that I'm out here, it seems that most of our clients (rarely use this anymore though) utilize the Zephyr extreeme box.

good luck

thanks a ton for the leads guys. can anyone spare a few minutes to explain to me the mechanics of how an ISDN setup works? as in, what the voice talent would need on their end, and hardware and connection wise what we'd need on our end.

OR, does anyone know someone that could maybe do some consultation?

thanks

Depends on where you want to record. Where the master audio is coming from. If you're just listening in and commenting. you're just recording a single track. Depends where the producer is, where and who wants to talk to who. Are you theoretically seeing the talent as being in a vocal booth, or is your theory that you, the producer is acting as if you're in the room with the engineer. Your question is just too vague for answers. Kinda like saying I want to record widget, what mic and what placement should I do.
what do you have already, and what do your clients have(or what you expect them to have), that would be a good start to help you out. There are setups ranging from simple commentary to remote tracking on 3348s (ok, some of you see how far back that is going)

we use the Telos Zephyr on our end...many of our "remote" partners use one as well. you can also affiliate w/ EDNet and they can act as a bridge between dissimilar codecs...a life-saver at times.

you have a box on your end, they have one on their end. plug your ISDN lines into it...agree by email or telephone what settings to use for the send/recieve feeds, and one of you dials the other. easy.

often, something odd happens and you have to re-dial or re-boot the units (at least w/ the Zephyr) but don't panic...it happens.

the main thing to get the hang of is the "mix-minus"...you can no doubt google
that term or email me off list if you want it broken down.

sorry if this is too basic...no offense intended...just covering bases.

off to AES...hope this helps,
marty.

I'd definitely go with a Zephyr. It's very easy to use and install.
