Thread Starter | Good mic stands for classical recording
Hey all,
I'm buying a pair of Peluso cemc-6's (with omni capsules) with the intention of recording recitals at music schools in New York, among other things. Anybody have any suggestions on a good, sturdy, versatile mic stand that I could put a stereo pair on top of? Oh, and maybe a good stereo bar too?
I'm hoping to spend between $100-200 on the stand.
Maybe something like this: Shure S15A | Sweetwater.com
Or this: Manley Starbird | Sweetwater.com (just kidding)
Anyway, something that will go moderately high, but is not too ugly for music directors. I think for the stereo bar I might just get a kind of long boom and a couple of clamps.
Thanks!
Eric

The Bogen-Manfrotto light stands with the 3/8 to 5/8 adaptor work well, as does the Shure stand, which you have mentioned. For the stereo bar, look at the Sabra-Som bars that Posthorm ( Posthorn Recordings) has - you can get one that has a 1000mm bar, the STX Custom Mount. It's around $55.
Have fun recording those recitals!

You should check out the sE microphone stands too, they're pretty good.

K&M 20800.
I use DIY bars...
Sometimes two stands are better optically as they aren't right in the middle, but at both sides of the director. So when he bows, he bows to the audience and not to the mic stand.

I really wouldn't want to be without my K&M 260s any more, both for the purpose mentioned above and as ideal stands for spots, often in combination with the K&M 1m extension tube.

Hi Freestyle,
B&H on the west side makes a Bogen knock-off stand which is about $60. and works great. Its all black with tripod legs and goes up about 13 feet. Once you attach the adaptors and a boom its closer to $100 and can go up about 15 feet. I use them regularly with heavy LDCs and ribbons (with a sandbag).
Best of luck,
Silas

That B&H stand is nice, too! I sometimes use my K&M 20800, but the thing is damn heavy! The boom on it is nice, though. I too made a stereo bar (looks a lot like the one Daniel had in his "Flying Mics" thread - ahem - and thanks, Daniel!), but I gotta tell you, that Sabra Som bar is tidy, small, adjustable, light, and not expensive. Worth a look.
Yes - two stands work, too - for the reason mentioned. Flying works, too, if you can do it!

You will find you need an assortment if you record frequently. I have always bought tripod stands - now I did a concert where I needed to put my mics on stairs leading up to the stage! Needed one of the round base stands to do this and didn't have one.
Sometimes need to get real high - another stand..
Sometimes want to mic under the piano - another stand...
Now I need a new house for all my stands...

Yeah, the 260s are good. Can also be used for smashing people's heads.
Screwing the base to the stand is a PITA though.
