Question HD24 crash (twice a day)

Hey there slutz,
I was invited by one of the forum's member to participate two-days live festival recording - And brought my HD24 rig with me (As usual). This is BTW might was the 1st Israely gearslutz collaboration.

At the 1st day i've had an crash after 40 min of recording...
The same thing happened to me and at 2nd day after 3 hours of recording in the field.

Both of the crashes was from the same "family" -
Whenever i have time (Due Breakes or between shows) i create a "new song", i am doing this because i've read @ HD24's yahoo groups several threads regarding faults with long recording.

Whenever it seems like a long break (Usually between shows), after i press "stop" i am dismounting the Media and shutdown the system, Both of the times it seems like everything is cool but when i power-on the HD24 it shows "Invalid format" message.

After i've managed recovering the stuff (Using hd24tools with Marc's (The software developer and a real nice guy) help) i've analized the HDD using PC tools and it seems that the media is okay.

Does anyone here suffered those kind of faults?

Best regards, Noam.

It has happened

It happened to me once or twice in the past 2 years but since I push hard the drives in the machine it has not given me any problem

Try it push the drive by the both sides where the handle is connected
all never transport the drives inside the machine

I also create a new song for each band

This should fix it

I've was having the same problems as you. I was told by tech support at the place I purchased the HD24XR to put washers behind the connector on the back of the caddy. I haven't had a problem since the modification. Apparently the way Alesis has manufactured ... Rick
Just go to the link below and type (washers) into the search box.
hd24 : HD24

Thanks, Rick Carlins

Washers

Well, i will install washers on all caddys - That's for sure.
It's interesting to know if there's people here that doesnt have those Caddy's fixes and everything works for them alright.

Could not to read anything about the caddy's fix @ Alesis's site (Have searched, didn't found it).

Thanks.

We have two HD24XR which were purchased this year.
We have not had that problem occur as of yet.
We’re using them tonight on a live jazz trio date in NYC.
I trust they will work just fine -- Hold on, I should knock on wood since I stated such a bold statement.

Shutting down after dismounting

Hey,

I've mantioned @ my 1st post, I've Dismounted the caddys (This is an HD24 action) - AFTER pressing "Stop" which is also an important action, only then i've done the shut-down.
This is a normal way of using the HD24's..

Steve - You've been working with original caddy's without applying those caddy's rear washers?
What's the recorders OS version?
keep in mind that i've installed the recorder in an ordinary SKB case (Not shockmount) and it happened in a vibrant environment (Didjridoo festival i belive, is much louder than Jazz Trio concert).

I would be very happy to receive recommendations for new IDE HDD to use with the HD24XR, i will use this caddy for backups for the time being untill i will understand what's happened...

Best regards, Noam.

yahoo hd24 user group, not alesis

Noam,
Just hit the link I provided in my previous post and it will take you to the yahoo hd24 user group, in the search box on that site (not the alises site) type in (washers) and you will find the discussion on this issue. Believe me it works.

Fix for the HD24 caddys

Well, i've been testing this for a while now-
And after 5 recording gigs with the "new fixed" HD24 caddy everything's seems to be working perfectly.

Anyhow - to all HD24/XR owners, If anyone here had same issues as me - DO IT (Put washers between the connector of the caddy, it's all explained @ Yahoo's HD24 group).

Thanks Rick!

Best regards, Noam.

Why are you dismounting the drive and shutting down the system? I've had my HD24 for two years and not a problem, I have just recently done the washer mod to make sure the connections are solid.

I've been carrying this rec. rig in my own car for the last year and since the rig sits at the back of my car (Pickup) i wish to keep the Caddys close to me (and much less virbrant environment than the back of a pickup car) while going to and from Venues - That's why i am taking the Caddy out right after the end of the recording.

Dismounting the caddy before shutting down is NORMAL use of this system - Ain't it?

Best regards, Noam.

I've been using my HD24 for 18 months now and not dismounted before shutting down. No problems. I've not heard about the washer idea.... but now that I know, I obviously have to do it....

I thought that you were doing this while on break between recording different sets. I misunderstood! I too always remove my drives while in transit and put them in a foam lined road case. I usually dismount the drive and then power down the system as you.

Paul,

I was going to dispute your logic on this matter...

I'm happy to hear you misunderstood the original post, because (as you already know) we should always remove the drives and stored them carefully while traveling.

Even if you think you don't think it's necessary it must be done!

i had an hd24 that was crashing like crazy. took it back and exchanged it and havnt had the prob since.

when mine crashed however, all the leds on the 'meter bridge' section would light up and hold until i hard powered it down. couldnt record ore than just a few minutes. plus all the existing tracks would get a nice blast of 0dbfs white noise.

that unit is now a display unit at a gc.

HD24 Drive Crash - Please help

Hello! I have a similar problem to the one to the one Noam reported at the top of this post.

I recorded 8 hours yesterday on my Alesis HD24XR and didn't back up (never again!). I did create 3 songs throughout the day as the number of tracks I needed to record changed from 2 to 8 to 6. At the end of the day, I tried playing back part of the last track, and a few things happened:
1. The levels looked like they were all clipping or -1 even though I had been monitoring the front of the unit and listening to levels at closer to -15. Also the playback sounded totally distorted and terrible.
2. I then saw an error that I believe said something like "Error with HD data
rate too slow". I did not write this down and am working from memory here.
3. I dismounted the drive and shut everything down.
4. After that, whenever I put the drive in question into either bay, it the
system gives me "Selecting HD1" and counts up, then says "Invalid Format.
Format HD 1? Y/N" Of course I have not reformatted the drive, as this would permanently erase everything on it.

Noam mentioned something about HD24 tools and someone named Marc who helped him? I really need to save the tracks from this drive and any help you can provide would be appreciated more than I can tell you.

By the way, what's this washer issue? I have the default washers that came with my caddies and never had a problem before this.

Thanks!

HD24tools
HD24 Tools is THE method of recovering whatever tracks remain on your hard drive. Very highly recommended. It would be highly recommended even if it were not FREE! Note that there is an HD24 specific web discussion group on Yahoo (operated by the author of HD24 Tools). Also HIGHLY recommended.

My HD24 finally died and I am parting out the working pieces (front panels, power supply (2 of them), converters, (both regular and XP), caddies, etc.

Sorry to hear that your HD 24 died. Do you still have the front panels. (alpha and meter panels)?
Thanks in advance
