stereo mic cable?

Thinking about the cables that I will need for an upcoming gig, I reaslized that I almost always use a stereo pair placed a minimum of 20ft to 50ft from the mic preamps for those mics. And unlike spot mics, the stereo pair is often placed so that the cable run has to traverse a variety of obstacles. (like when the pair is hung over the hall, or placed at the lip of the balcony, etc.) So, although running two mic cables isn't a huge hardship, it is twice as hard as running a single cable. If this was an occasional occurence, I'd just shut up and forget about it, but every show I record includes a stereo pair, either as the main source, or for "ambience." I can't be the first guy to think about wiring up a 50ft 2ch cable with 2ft xlr pigtails on both ends. But before I start buying the necessary parts, has anyone found something like this available for purchase someplace?

I use Mogami W2930. It is a round, 2 channel snake cable. Each pair is sheilded and jacketed. Each jacket is numbered. Conductors are 25 g. w/ a drain wire. Easy to put connectors on.

Also from Mogami is the W3106. It's a flat (Zip type) 24g. dual balanced pair.

Um, nevermind.......I didn't realize that 2ch "snakes" were that readily available. And they seem to all cost just about the same as I would pay for the parts alone if I was to build this cable myself.

www.avcable.com doa great job with custom cables. I've ordered quite a few 2 channel snakes from them for stereo pairs.

For what its worth, I placed an order for a 50ft 2ch mic cable today. I gotta say that these guys seem to have the custom cable biz down. Every product is broken down into components (raw cable, coonectors, etc.) so you know exactly what you are getting as part of any cable assembly. And somehow they manage to provide the same industry standard parts we are all expecting, but at very real price savings.

without getting into quoting pennies per foot, I can confidently state that I am getting a 2ch "snake" for less than a comparable single mic cable cost elsewhere. 4 XLRs and 50ft of 2ch cable for less than 2 XLRs and 50ft of single ch cable. Not sure how they do it, volume, maybe? ;-)

Now its one thing to take an order for high quality goods at silly prices, its another thing to actually deliver (and keep doing so without going broke). I'll let everyone know how this all plays out.

If anyone needs a 20-ft 2ch for DPA4003 (or similar pinout) contact me-- I have one to sell.
