Talking Erykah Badu's "Live" album.... info?

i've been listening to this CD for about an year now, and still can't get over how good it sounds, esp considering it's a live album.

great performance, great mix, great vibe!

esp the bass... my god if that's not the tightest, juiciest bass i've ever heard, i don't know what else is.

was wondering if anybody's got info regarding tracking/mixing for this. who, where, how?

Just listening to Mama's Gun. I heard her live album 3 or 4 years ago and I remember it sounded amazing. Gotta go and get it asap.

Speaking of live albums. Have you heard Jill Scott's live album? That's a great sounding live album also!

I find that one a mixed bag... Some tracks sound very nice, others sound rather dissapointing (I thought i was listening to some lofi mp3 when I heard the first track for example). Could be cuz of several reasons tho, there was more then one mix engineer involved (not uncommon of course), but seems also 2 different mastering engineers.
Maybe some tracks were just badly recorded?

I agree, the live album has to be one of the most good-sounding live albums I've ever heard. Also so much more feeling on it compared to the studio albums; with the live groove, nice arrangements and and some more space for the wonderful backing ladies it's bound to be great! The best badu album in my opinion.

yeah, i got Mama's Gun, while still groovin, tho it doesn't move me as much as "Live".

my buddy just gave me Jill Scott's live album. i honestly don't find it coming remotely close to quality and fidelity of Erykah's live album, mix/production wise. i do dig the vibe tho, esp the last few tracks.

i'm still looking for producer/mix engineer credits on "Live"... not mentioned in DisCogs...

Mamas gun is awesome. I have been listening to it for a few weeks now. I can't get over the drum playing. ?uestlove is amazing. And he produces most of the songs. The ones he does produce are dope. He's the reason I'm going to record the next project I'm doing on tape. I want that sound!

I haven't heard the live album though..isn't that the live version of Baduism?

yes it's pretty much the live version of baduizm, with some changes/extensions etc to the songs, just normal live grooving stuff. and the song "tyrone", both in live and studio version; I think it's not included in any of the other albums. but really the groove, soul, vibe and feeling of the songs are sooo much better on the live album; it features great live musicians (vastly better than the backgrounds on baduizm IMO), a fat nice sound and great vocal performances by both erykah and her backing singers. well worth buying I'd say.

and that bass... both the sound and the playing is soo goddamn juicy. that has to be the best bass sound for the genre I've ever heard.

Go, Pino !! To think that this is the guy behind Paul Young's and Chris DeBurgh's hits in the 80's (well, behind that chorused fretless bass sound anyway). Amazing.

Funny you should mention the bass.

I love that album too, but I've always felt that there was too much bass in that mix.

No doubt that was the vibe they were going for, with that bass-heavy Hip-Hop element.

Nevertheless, with those stellar musicians playing together and the songs and arrangements being the way that the were, I think the mix deserved to be more balanced.

Still one of my favorites.

I'm pretty sure that was a "private" concert for label people at Sony studios (r.i.p.). The purpose of the concert was to record the live album. I agree it was pretty great, only 3 musician's onstage. Big sound.
