Did anyone see the Tony Bennett thing on PBS recording some new record of his? It was great! My question regarding this show is, how did they get such consistent vocal sounds while he and his guests were rarely facing the mic? There was no pop screen and when they moved their heads (drastically) the tone was fairly consistant. Was there just a ton of compression in the mix? If so, they did a great job at keeping in clean. What do you guys think? Druhms. |

IIRC, they weren't "eating" the mics either...so that helps. Slightly off topic, but boy watching an a/b of singers that way was enlightening. The character of Tony's voice was really making alot of the singers sound a bit weak. My biggest surprise was Tim McGraw, the tone of his voice was amazing and he held his own. I didn't exepct that. |

For real! I've heard Tim Mcgraw's vocals so beaten do death with the Nasville tuning crap, hearing that made me like him....just a little. You're dead on about Tony too. I guess that just makes it more obvious why he's one of the greats.

I don't always think he's the most accurate singer but he's certainly every ounce a pro and a gentleman... And he can really sell a song. It's almost impossible not to really like the guy. Er... Tony Bennett, I mean.

Sure they weren't lip syncing? Seen a lot of stuff on tv where the performances sounded amazing but clearely were just the result of spot on sound guys and careful preparation......check out jules holland, sound on that show is often incredible.....Erica Bahdu on Dave Chapelles "BLOCK PARTY". I often wonder how it's done. Really great gear and great engineers? Tony Bennet is great and sometimes sings without a mic in concert. Listen to early recordings late 1940's early 50's and his voice is still being produced in that classic operatic/croooner fashion al la tony martin where his voice was projected, a lot of the time he'll still still sing right back from the mic.
