Question M160 pair for recording grand piano?

Has anyone used Beyer M160 pair for recording grand piano?
If so what pre amps did you use?

I've used the M160 and M130 in M/S on grand piano. I like those mics a lot, but they are best on drums, IMO.

The best combination I've used on piano is an Earthworks TC20 and Beyer M130 in M/S.

I've actually been experimenting with several pairs of mics as a main pair for a piano trio I play in (using a grand piano). I've tried:

Oktava MC012's in X-Y and ORTF
Beyer MC930's in ORTF
The Beyer M160/M130 M/S pair
The Earthworks TC20/Beyer M130 Omni-Mid/Side pair

(Sytek mic pres in all cases)

The Earthworks/M130 pair is the winner by a long shot, even in a so-so room (live gigs), for my taste anyway. To be fair, I was not able to place the ORTF pairs in the most optimal place - so don't think that the others were not good. They were all decent, I just liked the omni-mid-side thing the best.

Hi,

I love a pair of 160's on piano and they work great for recording in the same space as drums or other instruments.I mostly used them with a hamptone jfet stereo pre but have also used them with some avalon pres(don't remeber the model) the pres in a yamaha i88x, and a fmr audio rnp.The hamtone was the best for me out of all those. I used to have a yamaha C3 (6' grand) but now have a mason hamlin BB (7') and I thought the m160's were a better match for the yamaha(it was not a particularly bright C3) I'm still experimenting with the mason, and I will try some different pres soon, one being a groove tubes supre I'm waituing for.Hopefully this is helpful
