Question “Burning In” AKG 701’s

Several members on this forum have mentioned that the AKG701’s need a period of burning in - they are certainly a tad harsh out of the box.

Any suggestions on a method for burning in?

Thanks

Loop a different CD every day for 2 weeks. Not too loud. Different styles. They do get better.

Have you checked with the manufacturer??? No one would be better qualified to offer advice.

I'm just running in my sixth pair now.

I do it by standing them around a small stack of books between the earpieces so that they're driving some kind of resistance, as they would be when on a head. There might not really be any good reason for doing this but it seemed to make sense when I thought about it and it helps the headband springiness/tightness to relax slightly, as if they were being worn. It also helps a little to reduce the spill out of the earpieces so they're less annoying when the place is quiet.

Then I connect the headphones to an amp and feed it from an FM tuner. Ok, FM is limited in its frequency response and dynamic range but I've not been able to hear any difference between K701s run in on a CD source and those done on an FM source, and the FM has the huge advantage of not putting hundreds of hours of play looping on the transports of my CD players.

(I usually use BBC Radio 2 as its a nice varied programme of speech and most genres of music with a reasonably constant signal level and no unexpected peaks. I wouldn't want to use a specialist station like Radio 3 as their listeners seem to be rather intolerant of other genres and I don't want my headphones whining about the dreadful noise when being asked to play something they're not used to like rock music! )

Thanks 0VU

What level do you use and how long is the run in?

Also if you are in the UK shouldnt you be PPM4 rather than 0VU
