Thread Starter | recording improv ensemble advice please
I play in a (mostly) improvising ensemble, which in various incarnations have played weekly for about 8 years. We play in a long narrow unfinished basement with low ceilings, and have documented every performance using a stereo pair- usually cards ORTF, sometimes Jecklin omni's. For the most part these sound good, obviously the room leaves something to be desired though. We are planning to spend a few days playing/recording in a rehearsal/performance studio: 25' by 60'. Musicians usually set up in one of the narrower ends, there being a lot of stuff-instruments, shelves etc along the 60' walls. We are recording to macbook pro with MOTU interface, I'm not sure which, but something fairly recent. 8 channels available, using stock preamps, DMP3, Beyerdynamic MV100. Available mics are: 2 unmoded Oktava MK012 with card caps, 2 Peluso Cemc6 with card caps, 2 unmodded AKG 460 with card caps, 2 AT3032 omnis with or without Jecklin disc, 2 CAD M179 multi pattern LD, 2 Apex ld multipattern condensers, 1 SM57, 1 SM58, 1 or 2 LD tube mics, probably cheapo's Apex etc... Instruments are: violin, marimba/vibraphone/percussion, clarinet, trombone, electric guitar and drumset. We generally setup close to each other and dynamics are always dictated by the quietest instrument, usually violin. Volume levels range from very quiet to medium loud, something like a piano trio type approach to the drumset, although not groove oriented. Influences are widely varied. Our violinist is Sri Lankan, there are a couple of classical composers, jazz and folk people and.... well you get the idea. I will record stereo mics, probably the Peluso's or 3032's. Everything else is up for debate. This will hopefully be released as a cd, albeit a very uncommercial one. Any thoughts on mic choice, placement etc? Bleed is only an issue if there are phasing problems or other detriments to the sound. No overdubs, punches etc... Generally there is not a lot of bass response from this group: sometimes guitar, bass drum or low end of marimba. Two of the players will trade off engineering duties, but we'd like to keep it simple. |
