Using an omni "mid" in M/S Question

I understand that an M/S set up with a cardiod mid has to be placed so the ensemble is in front, like Blumlein.

If you use an omni mid, is it possible to set up a little more around the mics?

I'm recording my jazz trio. If the groups makes a sort of triangle with the bass in the middle, the mics have to come in towards the bass a bit such that the piano and drums go past 180 degrees a little in order to get the right balance. With a cardiod mid, I pull them away and spot mic the bass. I'd rather keep just the pair.

I can't really try it without committing to it, since I play on the gig and I can't decode the M/S until after. So I thought I'd ask if it's correct first. This way, I can place the omni until the balance is right, then place the side mic and hit "record". That's my hope anyway.

Thank you.

Yes you can. Unless you use more S signal than M signal, an MS array with M=omni has no out of phase regions.
