I think you want an M-S set up for this - that way you can point the null of the cardioid and the figure-8 at the stage and get some isolation.

what's your budget? there really are a variety of options at almost every price level...

You've got money coming out of your ears - Neumann SM 69, schoeps MSTC 64 U

You've got more money than me - AKG c34, 422, 426

You need to pay your rent and buy a mic - Studio Projects LSD2, rode nt4

Your flat broke - Audio technica at822 or at825

also any decent pair of SDC can be used in a variety of stereo configs to achieve decent results.

We use shotguns on stage pointing out. They don't have to be expensive when they're just recording a bunch of drunken idiots hooting and clapping, right?

my #1 stereo mic for broadcast and recording, as well as in ear monitors- a Shure VP88. I LOVE this mic.

I have used this on just about every aplication. When I do live recording, from the FOH area on tours, I use it as well. Actually get good results.

And I'mnot only saying this as a Shure Endorsee.... Had VP88's before i got the deal.

A buddy of mine showed me the Studio projects LSD2 yesterday. Big, heavy honkin' thing, but I have to admit, it was cleverly engineered and seemed well made. He claimed it sounded good. IMO, it would make a good "audience" mic, especially in Blumlein.

Both the VP88 and the LSD2 will do the job. Both are too noisy for low volume stuff.
Just my experience

agreed on the VP88. i've used it to record tone/atmosphere at shows and it mixed in great with the stage mics.

Rode's NT4 and NT5 (condenser pair) are also good, affordable options. i was pleasantly surprised hearing the NT5 - i think it's only $350? not bad at all. but of course, two cables required, which is less convenient.

The Royer SF-12/SF-24 or AEA R-88 works very well for audience pickup. Yes, it seems like "overkill" to have this expensive of a mic for that use, but a stereo ribbon handles the high-frequency transients of applause SO MUCH better than a condenser. It just sounds like applause instead of "popping." You'll find the ambient music pickup from the mic may be useful as well.
