Thread Starter | shallow rack enclosures?
I have several components that I want to locate near my listening position and I would like to keep the overall enclosure as small as possible. The good news is that each of the components is very short front-to-back, the longest is well under 6 inches. an 8RU enclosure that was 8 inches deep would be perfect, offering at least 2 or 3 inches of extra room for connections, etc. But I have been unable to find any rack enclosures much under 16 inches front-to-back. Can anyone sugggest any manufacturer that makes any standard products that are very shallow or am I doomed to going the custom route? Thanks.

Steve, Check out the Raxxess economy line: http://www.raxxess.com/product.asp?VIEW=1&ID=209 It looks like they have 5 different models that are 15 3/4" deep. Here is the chart: http://www.raxxess.com/assets/erchart.html This is the shortest I've ever seen, anything more shallow will have to be custom. |

Does it need to be a shock mounted case? I think custom will be the way if it's really necessary to have a shallow rack, I've recently been looking everywhere for different racks and I haven't seen any shallow. Here in Italy my custom racks cost me about the same as the standrd models. Give the Jan-Al site a look, they do custom work.

They should be able to make one for you with the depth you want.

I had stumbled across that site a week or two ago and then completely forgot about it. I doubt I would have come across it again. They seem like they should be able to provide exactly what I need at a very reasonable cost. |

SKB makes shallow depth rack cases, I think 3, 4 & 5 spaces. Anyway, the total depth is about 10 1/2" which is perfect for a lot of gear.

oh God, I'm gonna regret this.......I never thought I'd be known as a case snob....but I just don't get the point behind those cheap plastic molded cases. Especially in this case when the "hand made in the USA real wood from trees" cases are cheaper than the baggies.

I only have wood racks made custom. I do not understand the "slapped together with cheap materials in China for the same price" racks either.

I'm sure I've been in Music-Go-Wrong and seen little 8-space racks that consist of nothing more than the rack rails held up by some metal bottom piece. The whole thing tilts back slightly. In other words, the rack has no "depth" at all. It's just open behind the rails. I think it would discourage you from setting your coffee mug on top of it as well, which can be a good thing.

Thread Starter | Talk to musicans and roadies who are loading racks and racks of gear in and out of clubs every night. I'm sure those things have prevented many spine injuries. In my miss-spent youth, I humped a Mesa Boogie Bass 400 and two 1-15 cabs, all in full ATA road cases, 3 to 5 nights per week for almost a dozen years. Now I am older, fatter and less limber, so my new Genex recorder (in full 2" custom shockmount case) catches a ride on one of those amazing Ruxxac folding hand carts. We get older, we get smarter, but we never subject our gear to cheap cases. |

The rack I carry to FOH gigs has three pieces of gear in a four space wooden case. The rack weighs almost as much as the gear, so I can see the point in having plastic SKB style racks. Though, they don't hold up as well as wooden cases IMHO.
