TC Helicon VoiceLive Vocal Processor

i sing for a loud rock band (not metal, but there is screaming) and i was really looking to add something else to the mix. the band and i have decided that we want there to be more vocal oriented things happening in our live gigs, so i started looking into vocal processors.

the one that intrigued me the most was the TC Helicon Voicelive. none of the other members can sing harmonies well enough to do live, so the 4 part harmonizer looks really nice to me. also, the tap delay and reverbs looked really good too, seeing as there are more than a few ambient parts which would be suited perfectly by those effects.

the only thing im concerned about is that it seems to be more for a soft singing situation. as i said, it is a rock band and there is some screaming, so i dont know if that would be a good environment for it.

if anyone has used it in that situation, or if you have just used it at all, please lend your 2 cents. thanks.

I have been using the VoiceLive since it came out. My first one died but my GC sales contact replaced it. Most of the time I just use it in the studio because it is so complex and awkward to use. The layout of the functions is confusing and on the whole I dont think it is a very user friendly box. The instructions are also not very helpful and the onboard mic pre can easily be distorted. It's also easy to get into the wrong mode and not know where you are in a live situation.

When it is working right and setup correctly, it can be a great effect, but as for using it live, I wish I had saved my money. Now, I play guitar and sing and run the PA so I'm already kind of busy when I'm performing. Maybe if you were just a singer and had nothing to do except sing and control this box, it might yield a better experience.

One last thing, you are going to need to be up on your music theory to get the scales to work correctly and sound good. My guitar teacher has been really helpful with this. When you get the right parent key and scale dialed into the VoiceLive, it can produce some amazing background vocals. I just wish it was more friendly for live applications.

Try it before you buy it, or at the very least, be sure you can return it if you find that it sux.

Cheers

Mark
