Talking How Far Afield Do You Go?

I have a question for you pros who do mainly classical/acoustic location recording. Do you find it necessary to travel a lot, say to other cities in your state or region, in order to do your 'meat and potatoes', day to day work? Or are you located in such large metro areas, that only the ocassional special, big-bucks-job will pull you away from home base? Thanks.

We get most of our work in a 80 Km radius (and living in the capital city helps, so almost of this is in a 10Km radius).

But a few times a year we travel 600-1200 Km (one way) to a recording.

Thanks Yannick! Anyone from the USA able to comment? Especially those from smaller markets like Cleveland or Baltimore and the like?

Not in a small market here, but my range is usually within about 150 miles or so. 90% of my work is at one of several locations that are within about 30-50 miles of where I live, but I have a number of clients that have me traveling considerably further. When that happens, lodging is part of the gig usually (although it really depends).

I've also travelled out of state and internationally for work.

Is Albany, New York a small or large market? I dunno... but there's a tremendous amout of music going on here, and in the southern slice of Vermont, and the western side of Massachusetts. Occasionally I'll go to Connecticut or New York City, but generally I'm only travelling an hour or so to get to where the action is.

We travel anywhere (well, almost) and everywhere...

We're in Hampton, VA at the moment and we were in Wake Forest, NC last week.
In two weeks we shall be in Miami, FL.

Nationally speaking we have been as far as Alaska; New Orleans; Mobile, AL; Pensicola, FL, West Palm Beach to name a few locations...

I love traveling and sorting out everyone's itineraries and such.
Local gigs are a "no brainer" for us. We can do them in are sleep...
Which happens from time to time.

Well, In the next 4 weeks we'll be in Chicago, Phoenix, Nashville, New York, Mechanics Hall Worcester, Kansas City, and St Louis (I know I forgot one or two...).
We have 2 multi-track kits traveling this spring, plus our fixed installs in Nashville, Kansas City and Boston.
As far as overseas goes, we've gone as far as Hong Kong (Exactly half way around the world) and spent plenty of time in Europe.
All the best,
Mark

We are based in Chicago and work out of Chicago for 70% of our work.
The rest is from a base near Heidelberg, Germany and Katowice, Poland where work in Germany, Italy, France and Poland. I speak French and I like the Frogs.

Chicago has a great music community.

To do work in the classical business, you have to live or go to where the big league classical is being played. MOstly that's bigger cities. I wish it weren't so because there are much more beautiful areas of the world that have nothing to do with big cities.
