| Hello, I need advice from you experienced remote engineers. I recently set-up a live multitracking rig based on Pro Tools M-powered with 4 Presonus Firestations plus a Spdif converter for a total of 34 inputs synced to WC generated by the Profire Lightbridge interface on my Macbook. Tracking audio so far has giving me great results but admittedly I'm a newbie as far as remote/post is concerned. Here's the deal: My rig has been considered to do remote recordings of live music shows for a television production company during an upcoming important festival. The idea would be to set-up next to the FOH board and using direct outs, track the various instruments and add 2 crowd mics for ambience. Easy so far, but what about sync? As this is for a eventual broadcast of the shows, how do I set-up my rig to sync to time code? I know I can receive Midi Time Code or Midi Machine Control with Pro Tools. Will this work? Do I just need to get, say MTC, from video control and set my transport in Pro Tools to MTC? I really need this to work as remote/live tracking could become a new direction in my engineering career... Any tips would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance. | To help further this discussion, here is a reply I got from fellow slut tnjazz: "Get yourself a MOTU MIDI Timepiece AV. It will generate and receive SMPTE, and also converts that to word clock that you can send your audio rig. that's what we use. You don't even need the fancy new USB model - you can get the serial version for less than $100 on Ebay and you can configure it from the front panel. Simple and solid. That's what we use and it's excellent." If I understand this correctly, I receive SMPTE from the TV rig, and output MTC out of the MOTU AV midi port and lock my audio components with the BNC word clock out of the MOTU? Or is the conversion from SMPTE to word clock enough? I still need a positional reference, right? This was his answer: "If you're not generating, you can set the MTP to receive both SMPTE and blackburst (two separate connections). The SMPTE out will then go to a recording track; the blackburst is converted to word on BNC for the remainder of your audio chain." Anything else I need to know in terms of sync with Pro Tools? I can get a MOTU MTP locally for 100$... But I need to be sure. Thanks, |

| This is the setup we use (MTP AV generating SMPTE from a Rosendahl synced with blackburst and generating word clock for the audio) . One difference between our setup and his is that we are generating the time code for the cameras as well as clocking all the audio, although it appears the MTP will receive SMPTE just fine (I've never tried it). We are also recording to stand alone hard disks. I'm assuming that sending the info into ProTools won't be any different in theory, but because I don't use PT I can't really confirm that. The MTP AV is basically the equivalent of the Protools Sync I/O unit from what I can tell.
