Thread Starter | Thoughts on this piano trio recording?
I've been going through the archives of the remote forum for some time now, which has been really helpful. That said, I feel I have so much more to learn, and I thought the best way would be to ask. For some reason, it won't let me upload this 3meg file to GS, so I'll have to link to myspace sorry. www.myspace.com/theneontrio This is a rough mix of a piano trio I recorded recently. No overdubs and all in the same room. Drums were a long way away from piano and bass, and seperated by lots of makeshift baffling. It reduced bleed, but perhaps makes the remaining bleed too distant. I'm using a MacBook Pro with Digital Performer and the stock pres of my Firestudio (for now). The band were very keen on full dynamic range. Drum Overheads - 2 x Beyer M160 Snare - M201 Kick - M88 I absolutely love my M160s as OH but the spill into the piano mics is less than flattering. Bass - RE20 (not used) and DIed through a fishman platinum bass pre. I really wish I could have used the RE20 as it sounded great, but the bass just didn't have enough guts to compete with the drums. I ended up going the "big fretless" approach instead, which the band quite likes. Piano - 2 x Rode NTKs as far from the strings as possible with the piano on short stick and covered with blankets. Not my favourite mics, but I like what they do to a piano. Any thoughts on the mix? Or mic choice placement etc? |

Sound very nice to my ears, but I hear a lot of compression artefacts... Can you upload a 256 or 320k MP3 somewhere? Daniel |

Thanks Daniel. After a bit more fiddling I've managed to upload a snippet of a different track onto gearslutz. Sorry it's so short, but at least it'll sound a little better than myspace.
