Talking I used my Purple Audio MC-77 live last night

Hey folks,

I played a gig with my band last night and I brought an MC-77 for the vocal compressor.

I have to say, it was simpy breath taking!

Studio gear live kicks ass!!! The sound guy nearly had a heart attack (we patched through an A&H console)

What a smokin compressor!

Thought I would share that.

NICE!

I've always wondered how the unit(s) would do in a live setting. I sold mine a little while back to a fellow Slut, convincing myself that I really didnt have a place for it in my set-up. Who was I foolin'? I really do need to buy another one(or two) but first, I want to check out the Buzz Audio Potion comp.

Now I'm thinking of buying the Vintech or Wunder Audio pre/eq for this application.

This will certainly give our sound guy a heart attack!!

But seriously, it was freaking rich sounding

That's good to hear. I love it for studio use. I'll have to try it out live sometime.

This brings up something I've been meaning to ask. I'd like to get 2 channels of high end signal path for tracking AND live performance - one for acoustic guitar, the other for vocals, singer-songwriter stuff, voice on the baritone end.

What gear would hold up to that? For convenience, I thought about just getting a 2 channel pre (DWFearn, 2-610, etc.), a 2-1176 and a 2-LA2A - but I wasn't sure how well that would travel.

Also thought about getting a Langevin DVC for live stuff, but then I might not be completely happy for tracking, though by most accounts it's a respectable unit and might suit my modest needs just fine. I'd rather not spend the same dollar twice if I could solve both needs with one purchase.

Ideas?

On the cheap you could try FMR audio's RNP patched into a RNLA it's pretty smooth (in it's price range) and works well live.

I mix a couple of acts that fit into the singer / songwriter category. I currently use a midas Xl42 for the mic pre / eq. on the vocal, which then goes into either a distressor or drawmer 1968. For the acoustic guitar I use an Avalon U5 into a DBX 162SL or the distressor. I often don't compress the vocal channel and put the 1968 on the stereo bus. I think I'm going to replace the XL42 with a pacifica and a speck eq. My only concern is the lack of hi pass filter in that chain. I have a shure barrel connector hi pass filter that's fixed at 100 hz, but I'd rather have something sweepable. May end up shelling out bigger bucks for the l'il freq. It's an interesting challenge using studio gear live. You have to worry about different things, like road worthiness, size, weight, and sometimes the warm sounds that studio engineers crave isn't what we are looking for in the live realm, especially when you're talking about singer songwriter stuff that's mixed at 90 db.

Thanks for the ideas. Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

One other question - I need some decent converters and also outboard reverb for live use. Anyone used the Rumour live? I seem to remember there may be latency issues, but I couldn't find that specific answer when I searched. If latency were OK, this might be a nifty dual purpose studio/live unit, too.

Peace.
