Talking Internet Folk Guitar 'Legend' seeks to Improve Quality of Field Recordings

My client, my client himself is me really, seeks to improve the quality of my internet recordings, both video and audio.

I'll start with a video I put up last night.

Benefits of Turtle Shell Picks

It's true, I might be farting around: but honestly, I get more traction when I use a stiff tortoise shell pick. Once you get used to your turtle picks, well I find that my plastic pick gets caught in the strings...and I miss the note. I'm much more on top of things with the tortoise shell.

Cool

Chandler, are you serious? Some folks in the MojoPie forum like the sound of the EV635s in this application. They think there's a folkways field recording vibe. Also certain mics have their own vibe, or colour, and might be well suited to untreated rooms, and the reduced fidelity of MP3 files or compressed video formats.

Also, different video publishers, say Metacafe versus YouTube, seem to mess with the volume level, usually setting it higher, so what sounds fine on a one's PC is different on the internet.

I'm going to just go read a book.

Really, if you want to be serious about your playing, you should be picking with a quarter. And none of that Canadian shit.

The tortoise shell pick is good for picking single notes. I got mine at guitar shop in Guelph called Folkway music. The pick is too inflexible for just strumming.

You can strum a guitar with a trailer hitch ball or a screwdriver -- how else can Willy dig a hole into the sound-top?

Girly fingernails made that hole.

You got the single note thing with the tortoise pick right on the head. The real talent here is to keep a thin plastic pick betwixt your pinky and ring finger for ease of switch. Otherwise, your fvcked. Now if you want to do it real folk style, clip the nails off a 4 week old dead woman and glue them to your own.

Now rock.

It reminds me of the new age acoustic guitar movement that's happening in Canada -- there's been a couple of festivals and weekends...but surely a clash in styles....cementing old hag nails, or even worse, acrylic!

My new thing is striking the strings percussively with a dead mole. You'll need a few per performance as they start to shread after a 4-5 songs.

Randall, be a doer, not a talker. And you'll want to kill several varieties so you can have varied tonal colors to choose from to make your guitar sing, or thump, or just lay still and not do anything, if that's the sound you hear in your head.

You need a sturdy guitar if you're going to play the guitar with a whole turtle, or better than that, a whole live turtle. Because of the potential damage you can do to an acoustic guitar I'd say whack a Telly or a Les Paul Guitar with your turtle -- I think those Strats aren't built to take on head on collisions with turtlez...

Guitar sounds fine. How about hiring and editor and a lighting technician? I'm so tired of amateur video. No wonder the pros get over $600 a day just to point and shoot...

Seriously, why is the light behind you, and why did you not cut out the part about the lens not pointing at you?

When you make records do you keep in the tuning and the silly questions from the band?

Sorry but I had to say it. Lighting is dramatic and lall, but can't see the subject: the pick!

Damn, that's some solid advice. How's about an Ovation?

I think I'd grab a turtle and go down to the local Guitar Center and test a bunch of different guitars to see what's going to work best. Always try before your buy (fvck it, pray also) and remember......

YMMV on all things musical and religious!
