Talking When mixing a live recording...

I have a few questions about a live recording I'm currently mixing.

I'm having volume issues... for instance, the snare. The drummer did a few leads and there are times when he's on and off, so sometimes the snare really pops, and other times its barely there.

Are there any shortcuts to keep a flat level on a track with out riding the snares fader throughout the track on every song?

Also two keyboards were recorded, one being a motif which was basically playing a prerecorded song that everyone else played with. I'm having the same issue here because when I adjusted the house sound, the signal going to our recorder would change.

Is there anything I can do other then automating?

compression is your friend here.
also if possible, try direct outs for recording, they are usually pfl.

You could always replace the bad hits with good ones...It would take a lot of time so hopefully you get paid by the hour.

What's that saying? "Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but don't want to admit it?"

Sounds like you're gonna have to automate.

This was my other option.

I was wondering if normalizing would work on the snare track?

Also, we used the direct outs on an Allen&Heath board. I dont know what happened.

On the Mixwizard, at least, the direct outs are post fader. I ran into this same thing just 3 weeks ago.

A&Hs direct outs are internally pre/post configurable.

There are internal jumpers that can be moved to make the direct outs pre or post MUTE, pre or post EQ, and pre or post Fader. You cannot make the direct outs on a mixwizard post insert - so I have some "Y" cables I use for splitting off the sends when I'm using compression on the inserts.

If you're talking the older mixwizard, the jumper business is not a minor undertaking.

Hmm this was a newer MixWizard with some inbuilt effects. I was working in the dark and couldn't find anyway to switch from pre/post fader. Is it internal on the newer models as well??

The 16:2DX has soldered jumpers internally, and you have to take the mixer completely apart to get at them. The WZ3 16:2 has jumper blocks like you'll find in a computer - still internal, but a lot easier to move around.

I removed the jumpers and replaced them with DIP switches so I can make changes in the future without tearing the board apart again.
