I need to record some ambient sounds for an art installation...Airplane sounds (inside the cabin, not outside). Was thinking that taking a portable recorder on a trip in a couple weeks might be the ticket. I have an mbox and a laptop that could work, but it's lot of crap to setup in coach...and to be discreet with. I was thinking that one of those Edirol or M-Audio portable flash recorders with the built in stereo mic on it might be the easiest option. I need to get some pre takeoff announcements as well as "in flight" sounds. So being discreet and operating under the flight attendant "radar" is a must. Can anyone suggest a unit that they have experience with. OR steer me away from a unit that is a total waste? How are these units: http://www.audiomidi.com/R-09-Portab...PID=392&AFID=3 http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOMICRO These come in at the right ricepoint...however, if they aren;t worth the money...I won;t waste it. Is this is for an art installation, the budget is somewhat tight. Thanks, Steve |

| ask the tapers
Both of those little recorders get good props from the concert tapers -- there's lots of discussion of all things portable and stealthable... www.taperssection.com |

I have the r09 and I think it is a great value for the money. I sometimes plug in a rode nt4 with battery power, but usually just use the built in mics. I have used the microtrak, and I think the r09 is a whole whole lot better, unless you absolutely have to have a spdif in ffor some reason.

I don't believe those have xlr ins? If you're going to spend that kind of money, I would suggest something with xlrs. I bought the marantz PMD660 w/ Rode NT4. The preamps are noisy for some unacceptable reason, but for another $100, Oade brothers will modify the preamps and fix the noise issue. At the time i bought last year, any other options were considerably more money. I believe you can buy w/ the mod straight from oade brothers though i was niave and assumed marantz preamps wouldn't suck.
