Question hypercardioid mic for live/rehearsal use

as advertised, i'm looking for a hypercardioid mic from live and rehearsal use. i don't want to break the bank but i'd also rather not a hunk of junk...

anything in the sm58 price range for something yummy?

Yeah, the Heil PR-20

or various Sennheisers and Audix vocal mics.

I kinda like the PR20, though.

Its supercardioid, but...

Try the Sennheiser E845.

Could work for what you want.

With supercardioids the only pitfall is the narrow rear pickup lobe, but I'vwe never had problems with it, or my Shure Beta 87 (condenser --- much pricier)

Another vote for the Sennheiser e845. Good mic.

Although I believe the rear pickup is more on a hypercardioid

The spec sheet calls the PR-20 "super cardioid" which is similar to hyper cardioid.

All of the OM audix are called things like True- , broad- , tight- , and extreme-hyper-cardioid.

The MD431. e845, and the e865 are super cardioid from Senn.

Yeah, so you need to move the monitors off to each side, rather than directly behind the mic. This will get the monitors in the null of the mic.

Actually, if you run the mic body almost horizontally and put the monitor just downstage of the mic, it will be in the null.

Remember that the polar pattern is circular, not just in one plane....

Yeah, but I find a lot of artists don't let that mic stay horizontal. Unfortunately, I always work with artists who like to go everything they shouldn't. The mic always end up being angled upwards and that's why I pull the monitors out.

You can't go wrong with a Shure Beta 58 IMO.
