Talking Ambient sound for In Ear Monitors

Hi

I'm working with a band where several members are on IEM's. The lead vocalist prefers to remove one of her earpieces and have me put some of her vocal into a wedge on that side of her - simply because this way she feels more in touch with the audience/rest of the band. Invariably, as the gig progresses, I end up having to turn up what's going to the ears as well as the wedge.

as far as getting ambience into the IEM mix, what would be a good choice of mics to use on the stage which I could blend into the IEM mix.

And also, are there any IEM products available with mics built into the earpieces which might allow the performer to dial in as much or as little ambience as she likes?

Thanks

Keith

414s on the sides of the stage facing the crowd are great for this.. I have used them many times, even Shure SM81s.. bassically any condenser can be made to work. It is a very very difficult transition for most performers, the important thing is for them to feel like you are 100% workign to make them comfy, be willign to try most anyting, and then when they agree to try your way, GET IT RIGHT!

You've had some good responses on another forum, and you're likely to get the same responses here. You can't really go "wrong" with ambience mics. I'm sure you have a budget; let's hear what it is. Otherwise, I'd say go with the Schoeps omnis, fly them in the room, leave them there for next time, and buy more for the next venue.

IMO, almost anything will work.

A couple of stands DSL&R at the lip of the stage with just about any mic would work.

C414s are nice
MKH416s for more throw
DC96s are excellent but hard to find
Hey, a couple of SM57s would be better than nothing.

YMMV

I used a pair of 57's on Friday night at a club I worked. The singer was really happy (he usually doesn't get ambient mics) and I looked like a hero. I just grabbed the only thing the club had two of and put them on either side of the stage.
