Talking mobile recording rig suggestions

hi everyone,

i'm in the process of buying an 003r through the digidesign turbo exchange promotion and would like some of your advice regarding a rack and ups. i'll be using the 003r with a rnd portico 5012 and add gear as more money becomes available. eventually, i would like to get a 4 or 8 channel dav mic pre and an aurora lynx 8. i'll be recording friends and local acts for free as i'm just starting out and moving everything from my car, so i would like this rig to be as light as possible. i really don't plan to travel on planes with this.

i'm thinking about getting the 6 space osp rack from ebay. they have two kinds: regular and shock mount in 14" and 20" depths with the lids off. the 003r has a depth of 13.5". should i get the 14" rack or will cables hang out the back of the rack and become too much of a problem? also, the shock mount version is about $40 more, should i get that?

also, is there a decent 1 or 2 space rackmount ups for about $200-400? any particular models/brands you suggest? i've been searching though the forum and was looking at the tripp lite but to be honest, i don't know anything about ups.

thanks in advance for helping a beginner out.

Is that 14" without the lids? If so then you should be fine. Also check out audiopile.net for cases. They are great quality for a surprisingly low price. Shockmounts are great, but they add extra weight and size. I wanted a shockmount case for my gear but decided it would be too heavy to lift into the car by myself.

Good luck with everything. It sounds like you have a plan of some sort.

yes, i have a plan of some sorts...

i checked out the cases from audiophile.net and they really do have good prices. thanks for the link. i'll probably get the case from them.

i'm thinking that i don't't need a ups yet with this humble setup?

A UPS is good for those times stagehands start pulling every plug connected to something before the cymbals even die out. It's on my to-buy list, but unfortuanately I don't have one right now and can't recommend one to you. You may try the search function, though, as there have been several discussions lately.

I got a shockrack from audiopile.net and it's crazy heavy, but oh so nice to have once it's loaded in.

The UPS I use is a refurb Liebert double conversion from UPSforless.com. It's very nice indeed!
I would never use one with a modified sine wave.

thanks for the ups link edwin, i'm sure i'll be able to find something that fits my budget there.

i checked the weights of similar 6 space racks with and without the shock thingy. the difference is about 20 lbs so i'll probably go w/out shock. my back will thank me for it.
