Talking Talk me out of this truck? Fast.

Is this a good idea? I need a room to get my recording out of my basement, $3500. dont seem like that much to do so in this case...

It's very old. I would want to test drive it first, and even have someone who knew about deisel trucks take a look at it. It looks like it already has some of the modifications that you would need, but I would question the integrity of those retrofits. Also, ask for a picture of the entire inside, shot from the back door. I was looking at ambulances and small school buses at one time. These are usually fairly inexpensive and are easily customizable.

yeah, I know about deisels. It is the soundness of the treatment, stoutness of the suspention, and the fact that the guy has no feedback wich has me hesitating. And also all the thick blue carpet.

The price is inviting, but when you cannot kick the tires, look under the hood and inspect the chassis it's a hard call. Since it's so old I wonder if you couldn't do better designing your own situation in a newer used truck that you checked out completely.

I like the side liftgate thingy. That's very cool. I always wanted one of those for Jethro, but desided on installing belly bins for extra storage capacity.

I may let it go and call the guy next week to see if it sold. But like you said, the price is inviting. I spoke with the owner, he runs a trucking company. Says he was going to make it a camper but decided against it. The mechanic said the truck ran good. It seemed like if I showed up and it was no good the guy would let me back out too.
I gota tell you, I trust truckers...

edit:I did not get it.

It's certainly a cool truck, however I think the age of the vehicle and condition of the outside of the box would make me hesitate. Seems like a fair price, but for a little more scratch you can design something that works for you. Be glad you passed...

The blue carpet was a little scary...

Anybody know the high bidder? Maybe we should invite him to the forum... assuming he's gonna use it for remote work.

Use the "Ask Seller a Question" link. It seemed to work for me up to the last step (which I did not take) which would have sent the message.

edit:
Oops, I didn't realize who you were trying to contact. Maybe the seller would pass on the info. That's actually one of eBay's few safety procedures that I agree with.

In the end I think you guys are right as far as building one just like I need. The more I think about a remote truck and how I would use it, the more I like the idea. I am gona start saving up for one even. Right now I am thinking a "Step Van" actualy.

Well the seller just told me the buyer did not contact so I bet I could get this thing for 3500 or so... Now I am conflicted as I had moved on, but should I think about going out to LV and takin a look? I am in Denver if you are wondering.

3000 miles -- Is it on a new or rebuilt engine or the original engine and chassis...

If it IS original miles check for serious rust since it has been sitting around more than it traveled.

Good luck!

I wrote asking for a lot more detail. Well see if he responds. Those are not the actual miles. The hub meter says 160,000 or so... I think at some point thought the engine was rebuilt as the interior says 60000somethin. Anyway, I am torn because I started getting the sugar plum dreams of a nice step van (like TBM) with a little more space than this truck has. But that would also cost more. Anyway, I will keep you updated. Thanks for all the help thus far.

No offence but man, that truck looks like something the Beverly Hillbillies should be driving!

That thing has been on ebay for-friggin-evor...

Its not really a mobile unit... its designed to be pulled somewhere and left as a semi-permenant building. It's not really built to tour. It would be cool to have in the backyard though!

It funny that you said this because that's how my middle sized truck got named "Jethro."

What TV show did Elroy come from?

Axiomhead is totally correct. These folks have been trying to sell this rig forever and it is more like a semi-perminent type of vehicle. It was not designed to be moved from place to place each and every day.

And personally, I think that truck looks pretty cool. How long would the drive be from Denver to LV? If the mechanic said it was in decent shape and you plan to park it for your studio...man, I'd go for it. It looks as though it was well built a million years ago, but the build-out means you can strip & re-build elements quickly. Especially if you are looking to replace HVAC, wiring, or soundproofing (which might be fine if it's rockwool over insulation, as opposed to some disintegrated foam). Bro, if you're looking to get the studio out of your home, this is a step up. It's not Capitol Records, but it could be a good mix room!

yeah, as far as that place in LA. It would be cool to park, if I had the space, as the reserve is actualy low for the space you get. I just dont have the space, and like you said, it is not moble.

As far as the other truck. I want a mix room I can drive around. I am working on a "growing buisness plan" for starting out with a little more work than I have now and then growing with the growth of any buisness.
The drive? Google says it is 11 hours. So 13 or 14. One long day. I have done from Seatle in a day so that would work.

Maby I get a truck like this and when it is time to grow I sell it and build out the big truck I am drawing up? Who knows. At this point the guy is now not getting back to me.

Ill keep yall updated, and thanks for the help.

How important is the running condition? Are you gonna be doing lots of miles?

How mechanical are you? Can you hire a mechanic in the area?

It's an International. That would make me think twice.

I have worked on Diesels. I can get the job done. At this point getting around town is the key for driving.
Why are you leery of an Internationa? Just curious. You do still see them on the road (not just the new ones either) but I do want some input as far as all this.

big trucks can rack over a million miles on them. with maint. of course.

It depends one how good you are at fixing c-rap. if you cant do the work

your self Id stay the f away from it. but if you can do the work it looks

like a diamond in the ruf .

but the way I see it- all that s-hit on the inside would have to go. so

buying an empty truck would make more sense to me.

good luck ,

Eventualy the stuff could be torn out, for now I would use it as is though, out of nesesity. I would most definantly do the work myself. Not willing to pay someone all that cash. I have been riped off too often by mechanics doing (or not doing) stuff I could have done. Time is $ but at least I am soending it on myself.

Call me crazy, and I dig vintage and all that, but when you're trying to build a 'mobile' business you need something ultra reliable as well as economical.
