But don't listen to me. I ain't building a remote truck, you are. And while you can't guarantee that ANY truck is going to be fault free is just seems to me that buying something that old, that's still going to need some fixing up/modding is a little risky.

I mean not only do you have to worry about the gear, the set-up and the engineering/production on-site but you also gotta worry about GETTING THERE on time and in one piece!

But really, that's just my 2 cents.

We spend all day talking about the maintenance issues of classic consoles, it's only right that we talk about the vehicle as another of your tools, right?

Anyway, good luck with it all!

R.

Well in the end you are corect about he maintanace isue. I think in the moble world it would be more valuable to have a reliable vehicle than a clasic console. In the end.
I guess the end result is that I am going to go look at the truck and if it is not right I will come home without it and build one in stead.
Thanks for all the input.

It's an International. That would make me think twice.

What's wrong with an International?

Cool

I can help you through this... I need more details, maybe a photo or three.
Hey, it's not a big thing really -- Kind of a no brainer...
The worst that could happen is you could electricute yourself.

I just found that link and saw the photos...

The connector says it all...

125 / 250 volt 50 Amps

It can be used as a 125V ground, neutral & hot single phase connector or a 250V --Two hots and a ground situation.

There you go.

Hey, you know something?

Something tells me you should buy that truck...

But don't be too eager. Do you best to get it as inexpensive as possible because the photos show you need a lot of work done to the rig.

The entrance door is cool.
The passenger side lift gate is awesome. I always wanted one of those puppies.
IMO, you must get rid of most of the carpet and foam.

Good luck.

Wow, cool.
Yeah, I am going out with the knowlege that I may come back empty handed. For me the big deal is if the thing is sound as far as the drive train. I am gona go over it fairly well and well see what happens from there. The owner is being very helpful so that is good. I will let you all know on monday I guess.

I agree that you should get it if it checks out. Since you seem to know what you're doing, mechanically, then you will be able to make an educated decision upon inspection. I'd love to have that vehicle, despite the "Texas Tea" comments. (And, of course, assuming it works.)

The Texas Tea reference endears me. Perhaps I should be called Texas Tea Audio.

I, too, like this truck. It's a real fixer-upper, but when you start ripping it apart you'll find how it was built, and be able to improve upon it.

Since the engine is supposed to be in good shape, if the price it right, why not? Do you have a place to park it for cheap/nothing while you work on it?

Oh that's brilliant!

I LOVE names like that.

On the surface it has nothing to do with audio but YOU know it's part of the story/history you're building with the truck and it's great passing stories like that on.

And guys, don't get me wrong. Like I said, I LOVE the vintage truck vibe but what I meant when I said 'We spend all day talking about the maintenance issues of classic consoles, it's only right that we talk about the vehicle as another of your tools, right?' is that just as we bring certain things up when someone asks about buying, say, an old E/G Series (maintenance history, re-caps, switches etc.) these are the same things that need to be considered with a vehicle like this.

It sounds like you know what you're doing though and want to get your hands dirty which is great so I really hope it works out!

And the fact that others are chiming in with things to look out for is what makes communities like this so brilliant!

Good luck!

Don't worry Ol' Betsey. I think it is more valid to ask about this truck runni right than to ask if the Hill Console I have has been recaped.
As far as everyone chiming in, that is precicely why I posted this here in the first place. I had read around a while and seend what it is like and that the folks here in the "remote" forum are compleetly rad. It means a lot that so many people have chimed in whith experience and with realy good questions (such as, will that thing make it to the gig?) and tips.
Finaly, so far as getting my hands dirty. It may be unplesant to work on a truck, haul gear to a gig, fix electrical isues, keep odd hours recording/mixing/driving/repairing the truck, and so on, but it is most asuredly better in my mind to be working that hard and "getting my hands dirty" for myself and doing something that I love and am passionant about, than to do what I do now, wich is sit in a chair in an office, or kill trees makeing coppies (the greatest offence is that I work for an Oil and Gas Company) for some other dude.

sorry for bad spelling. It will haunt my my whole life.

So thanks guys for all the help and tips.

That goes for future help and tips too.

Seth

Well I spent 20 hours or so in Vegas this week end. (I did not find I have an affinity for Vegas)
I decided not to buy the truck. It was layed out odd, I was worried my console would not fit in it (especialy affter I built out the treatment like it should be) because of the box dimentions, and most importantly, I got the "No Vibe."
So, Now I am thinking I will build out a truck. I am not sure if I am going to look at a mini-bus or a "Step Van" like TBM. I favor Setp Van right now but I am thinking of just finding the right price first.

Damn, sorry to hear this, but you DID check it out and if you got a bad vibe about it that IS everything IMO.

Now, about Stepvans and such. TBM is a lot wider than your normal Stepvan.
Keep that in mind when you're checking them out.
If you find a vehicle that wide enough then consider going further.
Most SVs are pretty narrow so you may not dif that at all.
