I didn't know the best place to post this but since i'm a remote guy I figured my bro's would be a good place to start. I just bought a kik arse JBL/HK system and would like to hear what this format has to offer. I try'ed to find "Annother side of blue" mixed by our own Remoteness but it's CD only. Thou i'll probably get it anyway can someone reccomend a SACD that will illustrate the formats potential? Thanks, |

Try SACD's by Telarc like benny green and stuff recorded by Chesky, they should give your system a good workout, also music recorded by water lily acoustics.

WARNING: SHAMELESS COMMERCIALISM!!! Try these SACDs for a really good system workout: Hiromi's Sonicbloom: Time Control - Telarc SACD-63655 MegaMovies - Telarc SACD-60535 The Big Picture - Telarc SACD-60437 RoundUp - Telarc SACD-60141 If your system can handle these at good level, it's doing pretty darn good.

Hey Michael, Let's hear which four non Telarc discs you would recommend? It would be interesting to hear what you have to say as always. I for one recommend most work done by Polyhymnia. One good one is Bartok concerto for orchestra live with Philadelphia Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach conducting released on Ondine. |

some non-Telarc SACDs: John Hiatt: Master of Disaster David Elias: Crossing David Elias: The Window Sonoma Records: Music for Organ, Brass and Timpani Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now (this is a DVD-A, but was recorded in DSD. I've heard the DSD source - it is PHENOMENAL. The DVD is good.) Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms - new surround mix! |

Maybe it's because my SACD converters aren't great, but I MUCH prefer DVD-A. The ability to listen to the digital output of my DVD player versus the analog outs makes a world of difference.

![]() http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/index.html there's really no reason you can't enjoy all the audio formats. This OPPO universal player has really good performance in playing both SACD and DVD-A or V. and it's only $299, available straight from the manufacturer.

Thanks for the heads up on the player, I have a cheap Pioneer DVD-a/SACD, but it is very noisy. Good to know there are better options out there should someone ask me. |

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've been in a shit storm with B&H over my order for the last week (broken and misrepresented). Hopefully I can finally get a listen tonight. To "DSD_Mastering" I have one of the recordings Ray did. Actuallly he was kind enough to send it to me a few years ago. So here we are three years later and i've finnaly got the system I was planning on getting then. I fully intend on giving that SACD a run for it's "Retail". Thanks |

1. Congrats on the Grammy! 2. The site actually lists this player at $229. 3. Is the onboard D/A really good on this unit, or would it substantially benefit from a good outboard (e.g. Benchmark)? Cheers,

You must have to use the analog outs for SACD, as the Benchmark can only accept PCM on its input. My Pioneer universal player (connected to a DAC-1) has obnoxious analog outs on it, so I can't listen to SACD's.

A few suggestions: Gaudeamus on DMP Recordings Dark Side of the Moon (just 'cos...) SACD sampler from MA Recordings (stereo only) Gene Harris Quartet "Listen Here" on Concord (especially the surround programme) Wayne Horvitz "Way Out East" on Songlines Recordings Fry Street Quartet (2 albums): Haydn String Quartets and "Voices of Modernism" (Beethoven, Stravinsky, Rorem, Scearce). Iso-Mike Recordings available from The Fry Street Quartet: Home I'm a bit biased about the last four, so take these recommendations with a grain of salt... Best, Graemme |

1. Many thanks!!! 2. Sorry - Even better! 3. The OPPO's onboard DAC is pretty good - much better than what I've heard from players costing 3 and 4 times more. The players digi-out will not output the DSD stream - only the pcm from CD or DVD. The next cheaper OPPO player has been an Absolute Sound Best Pick two years running. Like I wrote before, with players like the OPPO out there now, there's no reason to tolerate the audio dreck served up by some universal players that cost lots more than the OPPO.
